Prado coil's,H/D

Post by oldblue »

Has anyone fitted Heavy duty, Standard height, rear coils to a Short wheel base KZJ71?. From Chamberlin's.
Thinking of doing this and was wanting to know how they worked out, ride height, off road manners, etc.

I had them in my LWB and I hated them! Although it may have been the monroe adventurer shocks that went with them.

The whole setup was way too hard, the back end used to bounce. Oh and if your thinking of using them offroad, don't bother.

I'd go air bags if you want more drawbar weight.

Iv'e had air bags for about 2years, and one is leaking, so looking at a costing, air bags, verses H/D springs.
I some times have 170kg in the back.

Hey Kev,

Get your Wallet out of your back pocket  , get Di; a lite weight pair of Cowboy boots, leave the crate of Jars behind and you won't need the H/D Springs :P :P .

PROBLEM SOLVED,

I've fitted a few sets of Chamberlains springs to various vehicles, and every set I've done has ridden like I'd just welded box section between the axle and the chassis... I don't know what they do to their springs, but they are, on the whole, very hard-riding.

Having said that, I've not used the Prado ones before, but it sounds from what Bill said that they are the same as all the others...

Saying all this, I havn't had any issues with the 'raised' springs I bought earlier in the year...

I was useing standard KZJ78 rear springs in my KZJ71, this worked well , raised it by 25mm. But then I had them worked on, they have never been any good since then.
So far Lineside are the only place that have them, so my have to order a set tomorrow.

I am told that Chamberlain's dont 'sprag' their springs pre & post heat treatment like all the good quality springmakers do.
This means that over time they settle.

Paul Delis told me that when he initially designed the 4" lift Prado springs, that Chamberlains were very reluctant to make them as they considered them to be very soft.... What does that say about their other springs!?

My experience with Chamberlains several years ago, was that they just copy springs. They dont actually know how to do the calcs to get the setup that you are after. This was in another form of motorsport and they may have changed in the last 4 years.
Having said that, I have found that it is not that hard to search and find spring design formulas and that the equations are not that difficult, so folks can design their own.

Kevin,
How did you have the KZJ-78 springs worked on?
What do you find your articulation like with the -78 springs under your Prado?
Sounds like you carry similar weights to me, hmm is this an option for me?

The springs were reshaped to lower them X 25mm, then tempered.
I sum times carry a heavy power chair, and when towing a caravan, the bump stops are getting a good work out.
The rear raised up about 25-30mm and I cast up sum alloy spacers, 25mm for the front to level thing out. as the front springs are the same on both Prado's.
Just remember that it's the KZJ78 rears the you need to fit.

You could try mudhog they are the tough dog agent, I have a trial set of springs not much over standard but heaps better ride and load carry.
But standard were so stuffed the front bottomed out over bumps.
They can make anything you want, height, and for your weight.
Howard from mudhog is great to deal with and knows his stuff.
Don't have his number but adds in the 4wd mags.
Good luck post how it works out.

Interesting
Are they the same number of turns or not?

My bumpstops run about 25mm off the axle so any large bump or axle artic they bottom out. Not good on the alloy rims when you are under the real hills up the Wilberforce in the Unknown stream!

Does Mudhog have a web address?

I don't think they have web address but could be wrong, do have email but can't find it. My bump stops were taking such a pounding half the rubber looked clean and well used all the time even after playing in the mud.

The KZJ71 springs measure 380mm high and the KZJ78 are approx 50mm longer. when out of the Prado.

Cheers for the heights Kev.
If you let me know the number of full turns and how much of a complete circle the ends are, and the OD of the coils, I assume the are all the same dia, I can probably work out the spring rates etc if you want.
(I dont have access to the -78 springs)

And this what you end up with, when you fit the Prado KZJ78 rear in to a KZJ71 rear Prado.http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/images/ ... .thumb.jpg
