Lexus V8 into VZ130 Surf

Post by mudbugga »

I'm trying to get as much info as I can before I start doing a conversion to my bros surf. It has a 3VZ V6 auto and I want to put a 1UZ v8 in it and hope to use the std auto. Has anyone done this or know what adapter to use (or know someone who makes an adapter)?

Try the people at Coversion Components in Waihi, there custom made
all types of bellhousings, and supply at hardware nessesary to install,
phone 07 8638509, did a conversion on LN-65 Hilux to rover 3.5
every thing supplied fit and the quaility was great.

why not use the lexus auto an bellhousing?
do the newer surf autos not bolt onto the lexus bellhousing like the ln130's?

You dont need an adapter. Either swap the surf output shaft on to the 1uz trans, or use a 1uz bellhousing and bolt it onto the surf trans, and also drill the hole for the speed sensor. Easy as pie.

Use the 1uz torque converter and flex plate though

Can't use 1uz bellhousing without an adapter between trans and bellhousing. Also to change input shaft to 1uz type can't be done withou major mods to vz trans. There are 2 types of 1uz auto bellhousings. You can tell the difference by markings on top of bellhousing. One has a 6 degree offset the other hasn't. The markings are either U1 for non offset and U2 for 6deg offset.

mudbugga, Im pretty certain that the bellhousings are interchangeable. And the 3vz makes it a 2nd gen surf (am I right). What year is it?

And yes you do need to change the inputshaft and oil pump which is dead easy. You just unbolt them and change them around. Simple.

Otherwise pull the auto, and put the output shaft from the surf auto into the 1uz trans.

And you want the U1 bellhousing.

Correct!
Im going to be using the surf trans, U1 bellhousing, lexus torque converter n flex plate and lexus input shaft an pump....if i ever get this 2nd motor here!!

Using the VZN130G electronic auto gearbox in 1UZ conversion

Post by muddrat »

Hi All,

I was told to day by a mechanic that has done a few lexus conversions, that you get issues with the VZN130G's auto box because it is an electronic shifting box that is controlled from the engines ecu.
So if you use the 1UZ's ecu (rather than spending $$ on a link) it can be a problem? Can anyone confirm this?

Also, has anyone here completed a 1UZ into a VZN130G using the surf auto box? If so were there any issues not raised here?

Thanks in advance

Most commonly ya hard wire the auto an change it manually but if you run the std comp you can buy trans controllers starting at about $600 to approx 2500.

When i was looking at doin this conversion i was looking into running the std hilux computer in sync with the 1uz comp but yea for different reasons im no longer going to be doing this conversion..rung the engine guy today an said not to worry bout it

Toyota V8 into VZ130 Surf

Post by mudbugga »

Does anyone know what to do with wiring up the ecu for the toyota v8 and the std vz ecu so the trans works properly? Apparently I have to piggy back the ecu's so the trans works. Is this correct? Anyone done something that they recommend?

Why not ask a auto sparky like "Tower Auto". They helped sort out my V8 wiring and did a great job. =)

You would have to find a A343 from a prado or 70 series. They sell on trademe for about 100-200. Then all you change is the input shalf and the bellhousing.

Which city / town are you in.

I've got the same trans. The problem I face is the trans is electronically controlled by the ecu (not a stand alone ecu) and when the 1uz ecu is used the trans isn't controlled as the v8 has a stand alone ecu for the trans. Apparently there are available stand alone ecu's from other vehicles that use the same trans (some jeep, isuzu, nissan, ford) that can be wired in. The shift pattern changes.(D- changes through all gears normally, 2- drops it out of o/d, 1- won't select low unless o/d button pushed).
See the guys at 4wd Accessories in CHCH. They're really helpful.

Best to use the std v8 ecu cause it makes better HP and makes engine run smoother and a lot more economical just ask madaz068 about his prado!

To use v6 ecu can be done but it takes a lot of mucking around. More cost effective to try and get a stand alone ecu for trans and run v8 ecu to run motor only.

use the v8 ecu for the engine and the standard one for the trans its sort of like piggy backing them together

Yeah. The effort to get it to operate properly makes it too expensive if you get someone to do it for you and too time consuming if you do it yourself.
It can be done though so I've been told. Shift quality isn't the same though for some reason.
