Post by red-devil »

is there any chance that there is a nice big gap between the valves and the pistons

As the cambelt broke last night.

I broke the one on my pajero when I had it, didnt realise so kept trying to start it  (didnt know a dam thing about engines at the time), took it to a mechanic who replaced the cam belt did a compression test and it was as good as gold, but he said I was very lucky

I broke a cambelt on my 2.5T diesel Pajero and broke most of the rocker arms. I replaced the head as it was cracked anyway.

Damage will depend on how hard the engine was going at the time of the break.
Generally damage will be limited push rods or rockers but at the other end of the scale valves through pistions etc are not unheard of. Tappet cover off and strip out front will assess amount of damage.

6g72 12 valve motor is a free spinner so you should be right. :)

The 6g74 DOHC is an interferance one.

I know of one other VX that broke a belt. It was fine they were just pulling away and grabbing second and nothing there had to roll to the side of the road and it was all OK.

All they did was pull it re time it wind it over by hand (no glow plugs) and checked everything was still all timed right (and didn't feel or hear anything) they threw in the glow plug's started it up and drove it to a mechanic for a leak down test.

It came back good as gold and is still running today as far as I know (He sold it still going strong about a year later after a tour of the south island and several long trips towing boats)

Good luck

Yea oops! Now my mistake!

Um, hate to say it but.........

Standard 2.5 repair is rocker arms. They crack the housings that hold the rocker arm in place but usually saves the valves.
