Morning all
For a change Ive picked up another Rangie. Has bits on it I needed for a road legal toy hence the purchase. Having driven it home on the Auckland motorway, the rear diff has quite a whine coming from it at around the 100kph mark. Is enough to be annoying. It has an ARB locker in it, assuming this is in reasonable nick is the whine likely to be a pinion bearing or more the meshing of crownwheel/pinion?? Bit hard to tell with the vague description, but have others had whining rear diffs and found a common fault??
cheers
Rex
Rangie - noisey rear end
I'd pull the unit and have a look, pay to change the oil anyway especially if you don't know the history
The ARB trouble shooting guide (from service manual) says
"Running noise from differential
-Carrier bearings damaged or worn out
-Incorrect backlash setup between ring and pinion gears
-Ring and pinion set damaged
-Differential oil level too low
-Wheel bearing(s) damaged"
Heres a little trick I picked up a while back, when you drain the oil drain it into a clean plastic container let it settle for a while, then get a magnetic wand or just a magnet and run it around the inside of the container this will pick up any metal filings
Hope this helps
Cheers Reece

Thats excellent advice from De-Ranged.
I would also double check where the noise is coming from - the vagaries of Rangie acoustics can often mean that even though it sounds like the rear diff it may be the transfer or even the front!!
Best technique - get a friend to crawl around in the back while you are driving along to pin down the noise...
