The better halfs Escudo

Post by truck-fixer »

Well I have done a fair bit of work to the suzuki over the last couple of months and have deprived you guys of knowing whats been going on  so here's what I have done so far.

Started with a stock standard '95 V6 5 door Suzuki Escudo. Firstly some bigger tyres. 30x9.5" mudders on 15x7" ROH white spokes.
Image

Then it developed body-too-close-too-tyre syndrome and started rubbing with articulation. So a trip to 4WD Accessories to order a 3" suspension lift from Calmini. Big thanks to Rick for getting it here for me. Then fitted it myself.

Rear

Then for some water proofing. Thanks again to Rick at 4WD Acc. Fitted it myself with the aid of Ricks simple plans.

Then Comms.
Image

Then for some front and rear protection. So knocked myself up some bars. Thanks to Uniweld Mufflers and Towbars for the bends.

Bung them on with some HT bolts and crush tubes, checker plate, rubber end caps, Hi-Vis rated tow hooks and the missus' new plate.

Oh and I had the exhaust tailpipe redirected to keep it away from the rear tow hook (thanks again to Uniweld) and I also ripped all the carpets out after we flooded it in the river whilst testing the snorkel  .

So that's where it stands at the moment. If you've got any questions or want to know some more details on how I did something in particular just shout out and I'd be happy to help out.

it all looks real good.

couple of questions...

how come the 15 x 7 rims fit, I have tried a stock 15 escudo rim on my 95 v6 and it won't clear the caliper so I thought I was stuck with the 16's

can you give details on the snorkel as I've been looking for one but the major brands don't seem to do one for the v6.

does the tyre hit/rub on full lock anywhere? or did you need to wind back the lock?

Thanks,

Alan

Well firstly Alan I had the same problem with rims hitting the calipers, but this is simply rectified. You need to find a wrecker with a Vitara with the 1600 engine, take the whole front pair of steering knuckle/hub/rotor/caliper assemblies and change all of your stuff to this stuff. All this can be kept as one piece, and if you find a kind wrecker (like I did) he will gladly swap your stuff for his at no cost.

Front Hub swap steps
Jack up front axle and place stands under chassis, remove front wheels, remove hub lock (6 capscrews), remove half shaft circlip, take weight of wishbone suspension arm with floor jack, unbolt bottom balljoint (3 bolts), lower wishbone slowly being careful not to let the spring fly out and smack you in the gob, disconnect steering arm balljoint (1 castlenut), clamp then disconnect the brake line, unbolt shock absorber (2 bolts) and the whole assembly should fall at your feet, do the same to the other side, then fit the new stuff in the reverse order, fit your 15" rims and shes all done!! My Escudo wishbone had a cast in balljoint rather than bolt on so you will have to split this balljoint instead of unbolting it.

NOTE:This must be certified to keep road legal as it is a modification to the standard factory vehicle.

Secondly with the snorkel, I got mine from Rick Crosbie at 4WD accessories here in CHCH as he designed this snorkel himself. His websites are http://www.outlaw.co.nz or http://www.4wdacc.com

And no the tyres do not hit anything at all, they clear everything with heaps of room to move.

Hope this helps.

Will post up pics later tonight as pics take forever for me to upload as only on dial up and I have a few things to do before the sun goes down.

Right hand side view of front bar. Here you can see upper and lower mounts.

Image

This is the lower mount for the front bar. For this I adopted lneil's idea but he put his pipe right the way through. I could not do this as the radiator must be bigger for the V6 and it obstructs the hollow, so two pieces of 2" pipe were welded in the holes. 10mm plate was then cut with a 50mm hole saw to fit inside the pipe. The hole in the pipe was drilled out to 16.5mm then a 5/8" UNF nylock nut was tacked on one side then the plate was welded inside the pipe.

Image

These are the upper mounting brackets. They go over each side of the chassis with a hole drilled right the way through.

Image

Here is the lower section mounted up with a 5/8" UNF HT bolt. On the inside of the 50x50 box is a piece of 10mm rod welded alongside of the bolt hole acting as a crush tube.

Image

Here is the upper section bolted on with a 1/2" UNF HT bolt and nut.

Image

Image

As for the rear bar its fitted in the place of the towbar with 12x1.25 HT bolts and crush tubes.

Hi there, did you ever get the brake changes certified ? I'm due with mine soon and would be interested to know how much trouble I'm in for!
