2.6 ignition timing

Post by prespec »

Just had some work done on my 87 Pajero 2.6 and they messed around with the ignition timing, and it has not run nicely since.
I have a strobe but don't know the recommended setting BTDC.

Can anyone give me this info please? I have looked for it on the internet but no joy.

I don't know exactly but 5--8deg for 91 fuel and 10---12deg for 96 won't be far away, a good road test is to advance your timing till it pinks with your foot hard down in forth gear at about 30---40kph and then knock the distributor back till the pinking stops. To advance the timing turn dist; opposite rotation to retard turn same as rotation and one or two mm makes a lot of difference.

THE DEATH RATTLE (PINKING) IS NOT GOOD,

FITZY.

Thanks Smokey. I have used my new strobe to set it up at 6 degrees and it seems happier.
I finally found this setting on an engine spec website , but will still do the pinking test tomorrow.
I had set it up by ear previously but suspect I might have retarded it too much so the strobe helps to remove doubt.
