Spark Arresters Mesh Wtd

Post by Dick »

Hey Guys,

As i now have a 2.5in strait pipe in my truck, with no mufflers at all, i think i need a spark arrester for the bush runs.

Would anyone know where you can buy the fine steel mesh or gauze that is suitable?

Cheers,
Dick

Just use it as the hangar for the last bit of the exhaust (i.e. the exhaust clamp)

Here's the piccies of one I made from a sheet of guaze/mesh....similar to what Lilpigzuk has alluded too. It fits over the end of my exhaust which is nearly 3" at the end. :D

I guess it would be a good idea to tack/spot weld the end fold, but this has lasted me 4 years now. One day I might get around to sealing the end shut properly, rather than just folding it.

Finished length is 7" long. Sheet was 10" wide to start with. Hope this helps. :D

Just pull a strand out of the cut edge of the mesh and use it as a piece of cotton to sew the sock up  .

EASY AS,

I use one on my turboed Prado, have done since I bought it.
Why? I drive up in the high country a lot over summer and don't want to have to foot the bill for a DoC and Helo driven fire fighting session!

Having said that, others have said on here that turboed vehicles don't need spark arrestors. What is the informed reasoning behind this?

cheers John

I figure that the spark arrestor catches any sparks from the engine by very simply giving it something to hit to interfere with its path and therefore extinguish it.

A turbo is also in the exhaust line and so is basically doing the same thing.

That's my uneducated, unproven and therefore worthless logic.
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

Wouldn't a Catalytic converter have the same effect?

It is in the exhaust line as well. (If you haven't ripped it out   )

Spark arrestor - normally needed on diesel vehicles only.

Catalyst convertor - normally found on petrol vehicles only.

Having said that, catalyst convertors do get hot enough to cause/start a fire if they come in direct contact with dry vegetation (over a period of time). Best example would be when a petrol vehicle is parked in tall dry grassy area, be prepared for a BBQ.

Not just sparks...but the very hot little particles of soot and "crap" that gets spat out the rear end of a deisel exhaust.

Many forestry areas wont let deisels in without one on in the summer, and even high country stations - ie Molesworth - due to the VERY HIGH & real fire risk.

I leave mine on all summer, and just give it a clean out if dirty or muddy with a stiff brush

Just to clear something up...

Turbos do not need them as the turbo spools from exhaust (therefore collecting and the crap / sparks and pushing them back through the engine?)

Is that right

Or am I out chopping up the misses kitchen tools later on tonight?

get a couple of steelo pads and bung them up the tail pipe, then drill a couple holes just before the end of the pipe and put a couple of long M4 bolts thru it,one virticle and one horizontal to stop the steelos from comming out, works a treat to shut up noisey zausts and acts as a spark arrestor as well.
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

Turbo's don't send the crap/sparks back through the engine, its exhaust gasses spin the turbo, then goes out the exhaust.

My one is a makeshift warehouse sieve that has been layered a few times. Best to talk to who is organising the trip as to whether it is up to standard though.
