Diy flares... Rubber vs Plastic

Post by Dunga »

Hi all,

Ok, so ive finally decided to give up repairing my factory flares every time i tear the mounts of them.
The last straw was on the weekend when i ripped EVERY single one off bashing our way through the gorse on the wickedly overgrown Ruatapu track.
Anyway, im still not too sure whether it would be better to use plastic or rubber, for flex i suppose rubber would be the way to go but then again plastic might be the cheaper option......... :?
Any feed back on this would be helpful for all of you that have been down this road already....

I got a roll of garden edging from bunnings for about $23 theres enough
to do 2-3 trucks depending on size....I have had truck leaning on clay ruts and havent ripped any off yet,or bent any.....and they are alot cheaper than flexi flares......

perhaps the name "Ruatapu" might have been a suggestion that something bizarre was going to happen.......

"Two curses"............ oooooooohhhhhhhhhhh

On the West coast , its an old rail route that runs between Ruatapu (yes is does has something to do with curses) and Ross, however i dont think anyone had been down there in a while......

Cant remember exactely how much they were but I've got some like these. They come in a 50mm and 100mm size, and you can put a wire through the hole in the bigger one to maintain shape a little better...

I think it it was from:
NZ Bus & Truck Spares
NZ 4wd Parts & Accessories
Flashlube NZ
1/46 Hobill Avenue
Manukau City, Auckland. NZ
http://www.4wd.co.nz/

and they told me $15/metre retail and i think i just asked for trade and got it a reasonable bit cheaper...

these are the bushranger flexy flares

I used self tappers every so often but used a drill a touch too big so have lost a few screws along the way... if i was mounting these again i would investigate geting a thin strip of alloy the whole length of the guard and put it under the rubber flare then screwing through it, the rubber, and the car. just seems like it would hold it better :D
