Roll Cage legality at WOF time

Hi Guys,

Whats the story with roll cages/harneses at WOF time?

Not sure on the ins and outs, can someone enlighten me

i got the feeling that any aftermarket rollcage extending foreward of the hoop (behind the front seats) needs to be certed. im sure theres somehting in the lvva thresholds about it.

Off the top of my head.... Rollcages need to be certifed. Harnesses are not legal for street use unless you have a MANZ authority card. Harnesses can be fitted as long as you retain the standard seatbelts.

just been for a wof, have a roll cage, as long as it is not deemed part of the drivers/passengers compartment ie behind your head you will be ok
also if it has been mounted to the chassis, the mounting will need to be certed, this is what i was told.

harness can be in vehicle as long as approved and still current, but if not
leave your seat belts in as that is what they will check.

Havent had any trouble so far in terms of WOF's. As it is external it not only protects the driver, YOU, but also the vehicle to. And also (apparantly) is doesnt need the entire cert thing, cause of it being external. (apparantly). Dont take my word for it however!!

But it definitly saves the truck so much, as big branches, bush, banks and scrub hardly ever touch the body. I wouldnt have a 4x4 without the cage and bars!!

Its worth a thought anyway.

Yeh as already said above my understanding for internal ones was that a roll bar (eg 4 pt) as opposed to a roll cage (eg 6 point) was fine as long as the bar is behind the rear most seat fitted to the vehicle.

If you've got a cage in the front passengers compartment (ie one that will meet competition specs) it gets complicated for wof, like it needs to be certified and you need to keep racing log book and have motorsport id card etc etc.. but i'm sure one of the comp guys can fill you in on that if you want...

the Exo cages look cool, but I need to do a 6 point internal cage. I am looking at doing a bit of off-road racing. there are two classes, class 2 and class 6, class 6 is for 4wd truck with wof and reg (its a class set up to get guys like us racing).

So if I still want the truck road legal it need to be certed, and have the standard belts fitted, as well as the harneses for racing.

The other option is class 2, but will have to trailer it everywhere if I still want to do 4wd runs.

Hi, with a full cage in a car its has to be manz approved and certed, you get a log book and have to compete in at least two manz sanctioned events a year to get stamps and then you can get certification the following year. I guess it would be the same for 4wd's.

I suspect you might be wrong

not too sure, but I don't think the winch challenge guys have MANZ log books.

they must do it somehow

you need to talk to somebody with a winch truck

I enquired about this some time back and mufty is right thats the "legal requirement" but I also got told that in 4wd's becouse there not boy racer cars and there is more room alot of warrent guys will let it slip got told not to take it in to VTNZ tho :lol:

Hey mat track down one of the scrutinairs (sp) I asked into the rules concerning exos in the comps the guy I talked to (top compeditor) said in his opinion it would be alright so long as the size of the tube matched the span.. (extra width = larger tube) :roll:

also said he couldn't see why anybody would want to extra weight and all

Oh and a side note if you've got a MANZ exemption you can also get away with polycarb windscreen and race harnesses :wink:

This is correct for the EVO I had, the difference being i did not need a cert I gained an exemption by doing it this way.

You are able to run a full rollcage in any vehicle legaly if you get it certified without having to follow the manz rules otherwise it has to be behind the rear most seats and this does not need certification as long as it bolts on.

The rollcage on the outside I am not so sure about and Exo can be classed as a "strong roofrack" and require no exemption or certification as long as it bolts on.

If you weld to the chassis or drill holes and insert crush tubes you will need cert if you make sandwich plates and bolt around the chassis you do not.

But as with anything Talk to your local certifier as they will be the one making the tick's and the one you are refered to if pulled up on it.
