Why you should clean out your brake drums

I have been a bit slack the last 4 months - have only done a couple of muddy trips - Thompsons and a farm out west - so hadn't checked the pads or drums till last week - seems the previous mechanic left the bungs out :shock:

$3,000 of labour and parts later I almost have a working truck again :shock:

Very expensive lesson learnt

I've just done the same with my rear shoes, I pulled them out last thursday to clear all the mud and crap out and I found 2 of them worn down to steel, I'd only done 3000 km on them

Its like bloody grinding paste that mud if you dont clean it out :oops:

That wasn't 3k for a brake job was it? What else did you get done?

I had same issue when i bought my surf, mud from previous owners trips had prettyy much ruined the brakes (drums calipers, even the handbrake), freewheeling hub and ball joints had to be replaced, 2grand.... :oops:

i got the same with the axle i just picked up, gunna go disck brakes on the back...
