The best bet is to get the whole donor car rather than just a Motor, gearbox loom and computer. Converting to EFI it is better to have the fuel pump, accessories on the engine, fuel filters and all the other bits and pieces you need in the donor, and you can sell the parts afterwards.
It depends on how much room you have.
A couple of options's
1) Keep it Auto
Get a VN or VL these are the easier V6 auto conversions
2) Convert to Manual
This is not cheap and you have two options, Find a manual commodore and use the adapter (rare to find a manual), Get a bellhousing to suit a hilux gearbox. If you do the Hilux gearbox then you will want to pull it down and freshen it maybe even cryo treat some stuff as the power increase is a bit.

Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.
I do, cost-wise depends if you want to go manual or stick with the 4-stage auto. Among other things of course.
The cost of a motor is variable, depends what you can get one for. I just bought a whole car for $500 which is the best way to do it, as you guarantee you get everything and you can actually drive it to make sure the motor is ok.
I would expect a drive-in-drive-out cost for the conversion to be in the ballpark of $5.5k-$6k including the motor cost, adaptors (auto or manual would be within coo-ee of each other - the manual one costs more but your driveshafts and crossmember stay the same - the auto one is cheaper but the extra cost goes into modification of the shafts and the crossmember) - oh that cost would include cert - that way you know its all good when you get it back, but you would need to be responsible for anything outside of the engine conversion that needed attention at cert time.

Donor car = good
The vs and newer motors are the best pick of the bunch as they are much better motors.
VL v6's dont exist steve. They were straight 6's or a 4. Even though the straight 6 motor was 10x better than the v6 they replaced it with.
Dont go for the series one vn motor. Go for a series 2 or ecotec motor. As I said, the ecotec motors are a much better motor, if not a little more pricy.
if you go with the ecotec allow more dollars for the wiring as the imobiliser is built in to the computer and needs the factory key and some ign bits from the donar car unless you want to wait 40 mins after turning the key on till it starts, does this to over ride the security set up .for 195 bucks the old motors put out more power and torque with a new chip than the ecotec,

I think that was a typo, VN or VP Is what Steve probably meant to say.
I agree tho, the old nissan straight-6 from the VL was a nice motor. Not 10x better than the V6, but it was nice.
The advantage of the VN or VP is in the auto, its hydraulic rather than electronic so it doesn't crap out in water.

As Philux said, I got mine done at 4WD Upgrades. They did a pretty good job, and it drives REALLY well. I have the Marks's kit inmine, with the original manual 5 speed box. I didn't get anything done to the gearbox though, and it has had a good workout with no problems so far. Just have to watch your right foot when the roads wet
