inner tubes

Post by muddyhilux »

had a search and scrolled all 4 pages but couldnt find much, runnin 35/12.5/15s bfg ats and just wondering what all thort of using inner tubes, some guys i kno run them without ,others with, any pros and cons? i hear the valves get draged back into the rim but actually bein able to inflate the tire from dead flat without a full 200L surge tank is a bonus
thanks

oh and mostly used on road or on beach usually at 18psi or 15 if im a bit stuck, not too much mud tho

It depends on what you are doing, the lower the pressure the better to have tubes if you regularly run way low pressure and your tyre keeps coming off the bead then yes tubes could help.

if you don't know what I am talking about or run over say 18 psi all the time then there is no need to run tubes, some do for personal reason's (dont trust tubeless) but it is rarely needed, if you are under 18 psi and on flatish stable ground you are fine in low and in ruts rocks and tree stumps then a tyre is for you.

IF YOU DO RUN TUBES (bloody paperclip got the caps key) run heavy duty tubes (tractor or the flash ones Jaffa suggested) lighter tubes at low pressure can rub and get pinched and you are no better off.

I was running my simex tyres at 8 psi last weekend without beadlocks and didnt have any problems other than the beads filling up with piles of mud and sticks and crap. Robo had his creepies down to 4 and 6 psi (I think) and he ended up throwing a tyre and loosing the tube. You can throw a couple of tubeless valve stems in the glovebox to get yourself out of trouble if you throw a tyre or pull the tube through, just stick the tubeless stem in and re-inflate the tyre onto the bead with the tube still sitting inside the tyre :thumright:

yeh i was looking at those jafa, ideally i would like to go down to 15psi more often and 10 when im stuck but neva wanted to risk it and that was with 33s,thing is after watching the tyre man fit my new 35 tyres he needed a full surge tank to pop the tyre out against the rim whilst having the normal air constanly threw the normal valve,if i continue to run mine even with 18psi and 1 did happen to pop off id be screwed, theres no way in hell id get it back on whilst in the midle of the beach, thats the hole resoning behind it,and wopass ive heard of this bein done and from the look of ur vechile i kno y ya lucky bastard, wish mine looked as mean and grunty as urz,n yeh steve get what ya mean, like above i am keen to drop to lower pressure altho reading sadam husains comment maybe i might be fine,id duno, and as for the poll, its dam near 50/50,cheers for the posts tho guys, ill keep watchin and see what my brain decides

realistically the tyres, if good nicka, shouldnt ping off the bead.. i ran ole rusty's tyres on 18 - 20 psi ( within operational tolerances ) for all of that pos's life... goose prob runs that still on them...

tubes are probably overkill if just doin the beach runs etc... in sayin that, peace of mind is a big thing too.. what a pointless post nibz.. feck..

anyhoo... i had gotten one tube in a tyre as it had a slow leak and its been sweet since the day i put it in there.. its on an a-frame vehicle so no issues with balancin wof or whatever...

your decision depends on whether ya financial enough to put the tractor beasties in....

either way.. ya out wheelin.. sweet!

now where'd i put those feckin heineken's?

so you're out thrashing it along the beach and you have to turn to avoid something and bang the tyre pops off the bead.

I personally runs tubes.

theres pros and cons for and against.

with tubes, if the tyrefitter doesn't remove any stickers from the tyre you will have a slow leak after a while and also the mud etc gets into the tyre and rubs on the tybe and it goes flat too.

tubeless you will have the mud etc in the beads cause slow bead leaks and run the risk of popping tyre off bead at a freak moment.

so as you can see there is a reason why the poll is 50/50.

read everyones answers and go with whatever you decide.

I run tubes for the above reasons (ttre doesn't go down when you pop it of the bead, and if you do pop it off the bead, you clean the mud out and can get the tyre back on the bead with a little 12v compressor. Getting a tubeless back on the bead with a little compressor is more tricky.

I use M12 nuts screwed onto the valve stems to hold the tubes in place, agricultural but it works. The thread bites into the rubber valve stem.
