1ggte gauge reading wrong / overheating

hey guys

my autogauge water temp gauge is either not reading right or something is wrong.

when i turn the engine on, the temp gauge gos to about 110* then when i have it revved to about 5k rpm for about a minute the gauge reads about 140* which is scary for me so i turned the engine off, i didn't wire up the gauge the auto electrician did.

i lost the temp sender so we just used the orignal one thats already in the engine, now when the temp gauge is reading about 140* the radiator and radiator pipes i can touch with my bare hands so i dont think the actual water temp is any where that high,

i was told to take out the themostat and then see if the water temp stays low on the guage it made no effect to the gauge it still reads the same. i put the thermostat in boiling water and it opens up. now what could be the problem ?

Dude, you need to get a replacement autogauge sender to suit your new gauge. Electric gauges are designed to suit a sender with specific characteristics (in this case electrical resistance with respect to temperature). You can't mix n match.

the sender needs to be matched to the gauge,so using the gauge on the origanal sender will(at a guess)be giving you an incorrect reading. get a thermometer probe and stick it in the top of the radiator while the engine is running and at operating temp:ie the thermostat is open to give you an indication if the gauge is reading the same as what the temp really is. also,is the gauge in F or is it C ?? if its 140F then thats fine, not even up to operating temp. most thermostats open at 80degC which is about 180F. just to give you an idea

after looking on the internet the 1ggte thermostat opens at 92*C and they say to get a lower temp one (82*C)

agree, get the 82*c thermostat... and the right sender for your gauge

tryed to look online and seems as i cant buy a sender unit on its own

when i say lost

i left the sender in the old 3y engine that i have sold to a guy in south island and i forgot to take the sender out and remembered after the engine had been picked up by the shipping company, so i didnt really worrie about it untill now :rocketwhore:

For now you could get an after market guage so you do get the correct temp readings untill you can find an original temp sender also aftermarket temp senders are better than the factory toyota ones as they are built with a large dead zone in them (as was posted in another thread).

i am already using a aftermarket gauge as my jeep did not have a temp guage fitted

go down to a place like repco or supercheap. Temp guage sets arent expensive and come with a sender etc
