Got a few things done of late

Chequer plate guards an new indicators (dont like the std 70 series ones much)
Image
Image

Wrapped the dump pipes an made a new tail pipe that exits out the back by the fuel tank instead of in front of the rear tyre
Image

Got a new 80 series hand brake cable, (std 70 series one was too short after the diff was moved back) The 80 one was just the right size

Looking awesome! There's a serious amount of work gone into that build. How much more to go on your 'to do' list?

Shame on you Nibby - I was just admiring the shiny new 40 in his Avatar

Nice work dude. Are your shocks in upside down? Was some debate about doing this a while back (think it was Wopass in his coil conversion build thread??? Cant recall)...

That debate was on Nibby's build :D

Been trying to update this for a little while but everytime i write up a post with pics etc my laptop packs a sad an turns itself off
Anyway cheers for the comments guys, the list is certainly getting shorter, pretty much got everything sorted for the cert (I think)
I took it to a certifier on monday for him to look over it, but he said niether he or the other one in lower hutt can cert it cos of all the chassis/suspension modifications
So now ill have to take it to carterton to get it certed, talked to that guy an he sounded happy with everything I described to him except the tyre size an the fact itll have to do the brake test with 5 stops cos Ive increased the Hp by more than 50% so hope the brakes can handle it
Painted the barwork the other week
Image
New bonnet vents to help the hot air out from under the bonnet
Image
Made up some plates to stop the springs falling out
Image
D/shaft loop, can anyone guess what it is
Image
Had to check clearances for loop an make sure the spring retention plates worked
Image

Ive been driving it around a little bit an the gearbox noise was wearing a bit thin (was louder than the engine) so its in bits on the bench awaiting the bearing kits Ive ordered from Don Kyatts. As suspected the input bearing was in pretty bad shape, the rest of the box looks ok but the transfer case bearings are pretty bad an the Idler shaft is farked so thats getting a full rebuild too
Should have it mobile again by the end of the weekend

Also got my new rear window glued in, so its weather proof now  but cant find a pic of that.

Nice work. You have been flying through this build and its looking mint. With the spring retention plates, how much additional down travel to you think you have gained?

Im thinking about doing the same thing to the rear springs in the LR then getting some longer shocks (at the moment the shocks limit the downtravel to keep springs captive). I was just wondering how benifical it is.

Cheers

Well the shocks have 14" travel an the springs used to drop out at about 3/4 of that, now they stretch until the shocks bottom out so ill have to run limit straps to stop them getting damaged at full travel

Well heres a few more then, been conveniently quiet at work so all my g/box bits are clean an painted where required ready to put back together this weekend
Image
Image
Dont think the pto has ever been this clean since it was new
Image

Did some work on my locker today aswell, I wasnt sure weather it was worth rebuilding but talked to brian howatt an he said its no where near as worn as some hes seen, he suggested I drill some dimples to keep oil in between to housing an side gears.
Image
Still need to find some replacement pinnion shafts, my pinnion gears had picked up on them due to a lack of oil :x
Also cut holes in the bonnet for the vents tonight but called out to a broken down fuel tanker so thats as far as I got

I thought shocks are fine to have reaching full extension as this is how springs are kept captive in most vehicles. Is this not the case with some aftermarket shocks?

I might look at getting shocks 3-4" longer than the existing ones and putting spring retainers in the back of the LR. I need new shocks anyway and It seems to be worth it for the additional downward travel.

Cheers

Most shocks are fine but im just a bit sceptical of the welds on the eyes, Im not sure how they will hold up to extra abuse an it is quite a heavy truck so limit straps are cheap insurance

Put the gearbox back together yesterday, good to be able to hear myself think while driving it
Plumbed up the heater, an realligned my alternator bracket cos it wasnt quite straight an threw the belt off
Will hopefully get the rest of it painted this week an finish off a few other things on the list

sorry to thread jack,

copy this: http://www.gwynlewis4x4.co.uk/page6.html

and youll get upward and downward travel with less binding in your landrover suspension.

i used to run it on my challenge truck back home with the springs clipped in and standard rear arms with the same results as seen in the pictures on Gwyn's site. awesome kit.

awesome build, looks amazing, the only thing i dont like is the dropped front spring plates. The front is the least likely to move due to the front radius arms, imo you need to give it all the opertunity to move you can, the longer the spring, the more travel youll have available. and then weld one of those aussie pivot systems to the front diff housing to let the front flex like mad.

Time for an update, took it to the cert man so he could have a look an give me his oppinion an see weather he could do the chassis an suspension mods (He cant but will be getting Julian from carterton to look at it too)
Anyway the only things he said were that I need to fit wheel flares, replace some suspension bushes (knew bout those but hadnt had time) an he didnt like the way it torque steered under accelleration an decelleration. Main reason for this being the short poorly designed panhard rod   I had already been thinking bout how I could redo it anyway so wasnt too fazed bout it.
Anyway heres the pics: 80 series lower arm bushes dont like working on an angle in a 4 link
Image
Had good bushes in 80series upper arms so used them to make new arms
Image
Image
New panhard rod compared to old modded 80 series one
Image
Reused the 80 series bushes an spigoted them into a piece on volvo truck tierod

Start of new chassis mount

New diff mount

Chassis mount finished with chassis cross brace

Handles way better funnily enough :D
