Hi Wayne

You mentioned you have blown your rear 8 inch diff.

Is that one of the later ones with the 88mm side bearings and the bigger pinion bearings ? Or is it the old std hilux carrier ?

Did you have a solid spacer ?

Just wondering as to why it broke. I keep all the preloads on the tight side with mine as well. The Back lash between Crownwheel and pinion is 5-7 thou so I keep mine at 5 to keep things tighter.

Cheers Richard

yeah
its the 2 pinion so the smaller side bearings .. backlash was with toyota tolerance and was swiping over the middle of the crown .. i rebuilt it when i put the locker in
I'm pulling it out tonight so will take some pictures of the damage ..
for all i know right now the pre load could have bent a locking tab and it could have unwound itself

so if its my fault ... another 4.5 will go in
if its just done it cause it can
ive bought 70 series cruiser axles to go under and i guess ill just have to run 40's :(

might have been the 3rd gear runs up tommo's that killed it or the axel tramp (because i was to lazy to refit the rear tamp bar)

whack bigger diffs in mate. Alot of the trials guys are going to cruiser diffs now because the hilux diffs just don't cut it.

Lets see if I can do the fitzy thing

Its more of a reason to do what Jafa has done. Clearance is more important than power.

i agree richard, like your self the sort of stuff that i like to do with my truck means that i need it to be "bulletproof" cause stuff trying to drag it out
im going to shave as much off the diff as i can and really if clearance becomes a issue ill fit bigger tyres
the only other option i have is fitting a more gutless engine .. or detuning mine some more

i guess its just development
suck it and see
on the upside .. i now have a hilux lockright to sell and a set of month old shoes and slave cylanders + machined drums
i also have a solid pinon spacer and shims :D

depends on what kind of wheeling you do. For a majority of the stuff I do, light weight and power gets me most places on 35's. I could go bigger but then I couldnt spin the tyres as fast, then id need more power and then id break stuff. Its a viscous cycle 8)

You might like to check out this site while you are that far into the guts of the auto:

http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=267655

It shows how to increase preload on the accumulator springs for sharper shifts.
