Someone asked about the weather - the culvert at McFettridge crossing has all but gone, report is that there's only enough width for a 4 wheeler to pass. there is still the hard option though, which the culvert was built to bypass, but its been a long time since anyone was able to drive it. You'll need winches, extensions and blocks and plenty of time on your hands to get through but there's room to camp right there and its a nice spot to do it. We winched through there in the dark once and tipped Rake's Blizzard over right in the hole and its got a lot worse since then.

You could fill in the washout but it really needs some more culvert pipes or it will become a dam and wash the whole lot out when it goes and it'll be goodnight Whanga road until a digger goes in again. $$$ Apparently there's a spare pipe just back up the track a bit which looks the right size and you'll be able to reuse the old pipes as well with a bit of luck.

Or you could bridge it maybe with something you bring in, ladders, trailer ramps, etc. DOC are watching closely to see we don't cut down any trees or pongas from their property outside of the road reserve to use on the road. Cheers.

Just been out there and road looks good. A little bit of work is needed at the crossing and about 10 mins with shovels and we should drive the whole road. So all on for the weekend.

Please read this and know I am writing this with all respect to those involved in joining this trip.

You'll know from earlier posts that both the Whanga residents - some of whom are interested enough to monitor this thread - and the MT Egmont club and therefore WRAG (two of their three executive are Egmont members) have concerns about the road and its use in wet weather. You will also know the run organiser has undertaken to assess the conditions closer to the time and we assume he will.

You may not know that it has rained heavily and abnormally recently, it rained heavily all weekend and Monday and in New Plymouth at least it is reasonable today. The weather in Whanga can be different to other areas of course.

There was a bad weather warning in this morning's paper warning of worse to come as a depression over the Tasman has deteriorated to a major storm. I'm not weatherman Audie Auer (luckily for that, he's dead already) or any other kind of weatherman but I know when its raining and when its been raining. I know what Whanga road is like when the weather has been continually wet.

The decision may be made to restrict your trip to the arranged farmland and I hope it is if the weather is only half as bad as forecast. I hope any decision to carry on through the road is not made lightly and due consideration to the damage you may cause and to your own safety is given. I would ask Senior members involved in the run to consider everything that is at stake if you turn up there and its a quagmire in case you feel the need to make your own call on the day.

Thanks for your time,

Gordon Burnside

Hey Dave, no idea at this stage how many are coming through from Wgtn. But assuming there are several or more, (could we perhaps have a hands up who's comming from Welly ways?) and assuming they are here around 4.00 PM, plus fueling up at my place, and a good hour from here through to Sanson, I can't see us being there before 5.30 PM at earliest, if all the above is as stated. PM me your mobile contact number & I can give you a call when we leave here.
Cheers,

Good point, could you recommend any other tracks or 4x4 areas we could visit if Whanga rd is deemed un usable?

Not in that area sorry. (alternative tracks) In past years we could have arranged Te Wera forest, but their policy has changed recently and the new rules make it very difficult to enjoy that forest as it should be enjoyed and as we always have. The short lead in doesn't help either. Generally speaking, farmers don't like us using their tracks when its wet for pretty much the same reasons as makes the road difficult. The damage gets a bit much and their tracks are their livelihoods of course. sorry I can't help with that.

I have been out on the road this past Sunday. It is in good shape and we will respect the road during the drive.

If you worried about it get in your jeep and come on out.

All the people that are coming will have a good couple of days out

History has shown we can not rely on certain persons to look after our best interests above their own. The Mt Egmont 4WD club have officially moved to distance themselves from any such person and so I am unable to accept or even consider your offer, but thank you anyway.

Mate I've got no doubt your going to try and flame this thread again, go and have a look at the ORE Forum Guidelines Press here and concider where your posts are going to lead again and while your at it have a read of the flameing you've already created in this thread

And a reminder of one of your previous posts in this thread

Just refreshing your memories but, sensing your sensitivity, being a little more polite this time. Still accurate though. If its called flameing, which I doubt, then its flaming and too bad. Our relations with the local community here and the continuing good condition and management of the Whanga road are worth more than putting our faith (to do the right thing) in one who was democratically fired and discredited for past antics in the Whanga area. Just consider if Sutherland's track was threatened or the locals near Costa Plenty were to be got up in arms and you'll have some idea how we feel.

Anyway, the appeal was to the senior members who might be going on the trip, and not to you, Mr unfortunate choice of name Hussain.

Ryan, I am still coming up from Welly, times are still the same as stated before.

My understanding of the whole Whanga road thing is, it is a public road and can be driven whenever, no one tells me I can or can't drive on a public road! END OF STORY :!:

That's the attitude suzuki, and if you're a member of an affiliated club, and i sure hope not with an attitude like that, you're just exactly the sort of person, saying and doing the sorts of things that our 4x4 movement needs to root itself properly with no help from the outside. What a tough guy. What brains and common sense you display, and the fact that unmentionable pariah (look it up) copies and endorses your comment, pretty much reinforces what we've been worrying about all along...

Gordon, re-reading every post you have contributed to this thread, you have not made one single POSITIVE comment. You have continuely been negitive, critical and self indulgent, not to mention bloody rude!!! There appears to be only 1 person in this entire thread who is looking after their OWN interests, namely YOU!!!

You try to come across as being polite and open, but in actual fact, you are making a complete moron of yourself, because as soon as someone says something you don't like, you attack them personally!!! What a fine, upstanding "PRESIDENT" you are.........not!!!

As stated by another member, Whanga Road is in fact, a public Road, and while we will all respect the conditions and sensitivity of the area, the call of whether we do the trip in relation to weather conditions, or anything else on the day, will be made by the trip leader, and NOT by YOU.

So on that note, if you have nothing polite, sensible, or postitive to say, how about taking your self indulgent and rude remarks somewhere else as we are all sick of your negitive and whinging posts!!! In other words.........PISS OFF!

Yes, you're happy to use my name, which I at least have the guts to include here, from behind the anonymity of your own nom de plume which shields you from any question or retribution from anyone else. Please know that I have to answer to our 70 odd members for what I say on their behalf. I also have to answer to the people who use that road for both their business, recreation and other legitimate pursuits as the default 4WD entity who uses it. I also have to answer to the Stratford District council for their continuing support and the trusts we're able to tap for money to keep it open. I also have to answer to the businesses who donate goods and services used in its upkeep.

When the cry goes up, and it always does, that 4 wheel drivers have yet again wrecked the road for others, where will you or any other who hides behind a pen name be?

I have used this public forum to advise and to ultimately distance ourselves from this run if it damages the road in any way. We can show we tried our best even if it was at the cost of being slagged off by anonymous persons like yourself.

Your just not happy unless your whinging or criticising. I am quite happy to provide my name, I have nothing to hide. Whanga Road is not your own piece of private turf, and regardless of all you have said, it is still a "PUBLIC ROAD", so get off your high horse and get rid of your Holier than thou attitude!!!

Ryan, hes just a Tosser and in my opinion his only motivation is to flame this thread, hes done it before and hes going to do it again. Some people cant help themselves?

I do agree with Flashs concerns about the road but I dont agree with his childish provacation and he holds no credibility with me and probably most other people on this forum
