hmmmm i do realise thats not always posible

This is an ideal concept and ok if you have extensive car/truck building experience and the funds to support it. A lot of kiwi "do it yourselfers" enjoy doing it themselves with more often than not, limited resources, limited time, limited funds and limited knowledge.

I think the initial cert cost is pretty good, but I'm in support of a cheaper re-cert cost, especially minor mods. Photo's from the origanal cert could be checked to make sure previous work is unaltered.

I still disagre with the "Authority Card" concept, and can't see how an will solve anything, although I understand how it may have to be a nessasary evil to run a lifted road legal truck.

Nah not true..not every 4wder is putting his truck through a certifier because it has failed a warrant...some of us recognise the importance of mods we do and want to get them officiated...not cos they failed a wof.

understand what your saying and possibly what i said didnt quite come across correctly. All i'm trying to say is that the certifier is making something legal that would be illegal if it didnt have his stamp of approval on it and because of that everytime he puts his name to it he wants to make damn sure that everything is "A OK"

When you have had a truck for nearly 20 years as I have had the hilux you find the whole 4 wheel drive scene has changed quite dramatically

When I had the 1st cert in the 90s , nearly everyone was running 750x16 SATs so with my Diff locks I could out perform most trucks.

But then others started fitting diff locks and 33x12.5s so in order to keep ahead it mean't raising the truck and getting more power so another Cert was required

Then everyone I was going with started fitting 35s and at the same time the tracks were getting badly rutted so once again more suspension mods were needed hence another Cert.

So It wasn't poor planning back in the 90s but just a matter of evolving with the trends as they took place and you didn't realize the destruction that was going to happen on the tracks

Looking ahead for the next 10-20 years 37-44 inch will probably become the norm as a lot already are on 37s and 40s so it is a never ending cycle of Certifications to keep up or return to the couch and sleep. Or have a trailer queen

Even now I run illegally on the road at times because I haven't been certified with my 35x11.5 extreme treakers so if I had an accident there would probably be no insurance cover

Cheers Richard

slightly off topic, but what sort of brake mods do you guys do when you're running 35" + tyres? Does certification require any brake mods at all? I understand that a hilux on 35's might "stop well" but just interested what the certifiers' opinions/rulings are on that

Mine is a 1986 hilux that had solid discs on the front so they are now upgraded to the later ones with the air vents.

On the rear I have upgraded from the drums and are now running Subaru discs.

I haven't been certified on the 35 Simex tyres but with the 33x12.5 BFGs at certification the brakes were a lot better than Standard with a stop time from memory of around 20 secs from 100 kph.

The LVVTA rule is up to 100kph and back to Zero 3 times in under 2 mins.

20sec seems too long Richard, last time i put vehicle through cert it was 0-100 3x in 2 mins but each stop had to happen with 4 or 5 secs with no fad over the 3x stops.this was recent ie last month.then if you've really increased the power some certifiers make it 0-100 5x

I can't remember, Perhaps 20 something secs was the total time . That was 4 years ago and whatever the time was, it was miles better than what was required

Do you wish to talk Formula One or do you wish to talk 4WD? If you want F1 then I will more than happily talk with you.

Actually my last Cert. was only treated as an add on to the previous one even though the fee was the same.

It's a good point you make about the cost for certifying being total cost every time you go back for certification, even though your form shown here clearly indicates only later modifications are tested. There should be lesser fee for re-cert.
There's another issue that occurs under the current cert system....
That is once vehicles have a cert plate with many mods listed it becomes "open season" for further modifications by same or another owner, the WOF guy has to Einstein to notice, law enforcement officer wouldn't know, and all other road users become at risk :?

Think id rather have a set fee, how many people consult there certifier many times throughout the build and have them carry out inspections before the final?

If a certifier was to charge an hourly rate for all calls/consultation, travel and final inspection plus the NZTA fees for the plate etc I cannot see much change out of $400 - $500.

Heavy vehicle certifers are usually around 120-130 and hour, cant imagine LVVTA certifiers charging any less.

It is not fair that the ones that consult the certifier lots of times should be charged the same as a person with a standard truck just fitting an after market turbo when all the person wants is a little more power to tow a boat.

The ones that consult the certifier should be charged twice the standard fee

Cheers Richard

Life isnt fair

One way or another someone will win, someone will loose and someone will moan about it.

Break it down bulletproof.
Assume NZTA fees are $100 for the plate, paperwork, administration etc

Bare minimum in most cases:
Certifier takes call about vehicle - 10min
Travels to meet you - 30min (more in most cases and sometimes after hours)
Inspects vehicle thoroughly - 30 min
Perform brake test / stability test - 30 min
Fill in paperwork, send documentation to NZTA and document as required in case of audit with photos test results etc - 30 min (minimum)

at $100 an hour he is already at about $320 plus gst. Really dont see how we are all getting ripped off when in most cases more time would be necessary.

And more if an emmissions test has to be done.

yes that's true, think it was an extra 60 for the emissions test once the 350 was installed
