8) Yep, i love the little 2stroke, its different and coooooooooool. Its got enough power if you have it in the right gear

I still have to tidy up the front end. It needs new king pin bearings, need to find new steeering links because ALL of the ball joints are absolutely farked  , need strip and to clean up the passenger side disc caliper, replace all of the swivel hub seals and felts and get some new SJ410 CV's and try and make up a set that don'tsound like they are about to explode.

Then theres the engine, it now needs new points and condenser and i'm saving my pannies for a MSD6AL C.D.I electronic ignition unit to get ride if the weak link in the ignition circut. That and i'm thinking of cleaning up my spare head and block and fitting that with the pistons and rings from the spare engine as they look in quite good nick.

Still need to sort out shocks aswell.

So ya, far from finished yet :D :D

sorry to hear about your eye, make sure you go and get it checked out, it may not be just scratched but if it has even a tinsy little bit of crap left in it and you WILL get an infection, go to after hours and let them look at it with the lights and lens, it will cost ya nothing. don't hesitate

yep, got it checked out this morning :?

Would you beleive that tiny winch is rated to 2500lb

With the MSD, i retain the points, but they just become a switch, with a max of 300mA through them. The points should last forever!!!! Be intersting to see how the multi-spark works for the 2stroke. Might be good, but equally well could dissagree depending on when the ports open.

Its mulit spark up to 3000rpm and sparks 3 times per cyclinder in the first 20 degrees of crank rotation. The good one is the MSD6a, thats a CDI ignition unit, this ones just inductive, but it was cheap

Well, a major piss off today. I hooked the MSD up, and no go. It doesn't work, spent bout 3 hours running tests on it, checking it with the circut tester etc etc, and it straight out doesn't work. Worst part is that the guy i got it off (trademe) isn't answering his phone or my very polite texts (polite at this stage). Lets hope it doesn't go bad as i know where he works. Will give him a couple of days grace incase he has issues with his phone or something, otherwise i might be paying him a visit at his work :x :x

just a question this isnt going to be road legal right ?

and for off road use does your roll cgae have to be made be a special person or can it be a home job ?

Not road legal, but no reason why it couldn't be, its just not worth spending the $$ to go through the red tape etc etc.

Roll cage depends on what you are going to use the vehicle for. If its a bush truck, you can make it how ever you like provided you are happy its going to be strong enough for you and what you are using your vehicle for. If your planning on using the Mindy in competetive trials, get advice on building a cage that will pass scruitineering, or if your like me and don't have a clue about building cages, have no gear for the job but want it done properly and in a short space of time, get one made like i did

The other side of the coin is that i have a primo cage, and a good light chassis, so when i get board of the 50 the way it is, i can go nuts and make it into a more dedicated competition machine rather than just an enthusiasts weekend toy

I've been hunting around for a while trying to find another engine with a good crank (bottom end bearings in good cond).

Thought i was onto a good thing when i found one on the "Blairs" web site amoungst there thousands of engine listings.

After hasseling the guys there for a while, I managed to get the engine with a start up waranty and a 3mnth warranty once fitted and running.

It showed up toda.

First up, i noticed it was a tad different from the two i have already. It had a different intake manifold and a side draft carb. WTF?? Don't think it would fit in the engine bay like that. Also had a big fly wheel type weight on the front crank pully and the exhaust manifold was different. All up, it was a bloody strange looking unit. Didn't think they came out in any other vehicle than the LJ50 or the jap import SJ30's.

(MudHaw,can ya get me a pic of your SJ30's engine bay???)

Anyways, i got carried away at smoko and stripped the intake manifold off to see if the important bit (the crank) was in good shape.

This is what i found:

Two of the three crank chambers rusty:

Image

I reckon this is a piece of broken ring. What the hell else would a piece of steel be doing floating round in there be from??

Image

Full size pic for the broad band guys

Either way, the engines fucked, and i already have a fucked engine thats fine for a rebuild, so gonna try get my money back under the warranty.

it could be out of a fronte possibly i am pretty sure they use a side draft carb
does it look like the engine may have been on a bit of a slant when in the engine bay

it could also be off one of those trucks they made about the same time as the fronte in the early 70s
my 4wd is not a truck

I'm pretty sure the Fontes only ever got the 350cc engine though didn't they??

The cyclinders sit at a 45 degree angle in the engine bay, looks like a half of a "V6" engine i guess. That sice draft carb configfuration definatly won't fit in a LJ50 enine bay (although the modle of the engine is stamped on it as being a "LJ50"). wondering if there is more room in the SJ30 engine bay and its out of one of those.

Either way, a blown headgasket, and then storage with the coolent still in the crank has caused the damage.

the fronte originally came out with a 360cc then they put the 550cc motor in as well

and eventually they made them slightly larger and put the F10A engine in

Been a bit slack with updates so here's one :D

Winch mounted and wired up, done a bit of testing with it and it works well considering its size  The main thing i was concerned about was it weight, and at 4kg's with 30m of cable i'm pretty happy. I have and extention to take it to 60m and a pully block to beef the pulling power up to 2500Kg (its rated at 1200kg, and the 50 weighs around the 600kg mark)

Image

Image

The MSD6A Capasatative (sp?) Discharge electronic ignition is mounted and wired in providing full power sparks through the rev range and 3 sparks with in the first 20 degree's or crank rotation up to 3000rpm. Past that the sparks reduce in frequency reducing back to 1 spark at 6000rpm. Seems to have made it alot more responsive down low.

Image

Its been a pain in the ass the few times i have been out on trips. Getting plastered in mud just from driving along the track doing nothing special. The dash gets covered, the seats get covered, the inside of the windscreen gets plastered. So decided it was time for some flares and doors.

Every one has been talking about garden edging recently so i gave it a go. Needs tidying up a bit, but works realy well like everyone has been saying!!!!!!

Doors are just ply wood with a water proof coating and a quick puff of gloss black enamal. Will look like crap in a few months but who cares. Found some landrover door catches in my old mans collection so put them to good use.

Now I'm back up to date, better keep things current.

Did some work on the safari this morning (wheel bearings, hand brake, front springs etc etc). Finally got onto the LJ at about 2pm.

Got a swivel hub rebuild kit, pretty good kits, i have never bothered with a kit before, just got the bits i needed from around town. This what was in it for those that haven't been there before:

Image

Got stuck in and ripped the hubs to bits. All the old rooted stuff:

Image

Got a bit ahead of the camera, but the kit came with bloody every thing, even the retainer plates for the oil seal and felt!!!!!

Image

New bearing cups tapped (ever so gently  ) into place:

Image

One side fitted and the pre-load adjusted. (slightly tight, but better than to loose eh  )

Image

Got them all done and back together by 5pm.

Got held up by the absolutely farked ball joints in the steering links:

Image

Image

Image

I have another complete steering set up on my parts chassis which is slightly better, so will pull that off and try it on The 50.Hope its good enough to pass scruitineering for the morrinsville speed event in september. Other wise, there is a place in auckland that reconditions steering ball joints,so might have to send it all up that way. ($$$$$$$ )
