I got problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went to pull the steering link of the parts truck and three outa our ball joints are better than the ones on The 50. Catch is the most important one is roooooooted.

Bugger.

Anyone know of a place that reconditions ball joints??

Apparently Autolign in Hamilton do em, anywhere else?

I'll make one out of the two that will be safe ish for the meen time so its still driveable, but need to new joints sorted for scrutineering in a month 8)

I might get a vid to show just how rooted ball joints can get

Ha, they don't have LJ50 listed on their computer,so not available lol.

Seriously though, i'm in the process of researching to see if the LJ80 had the same system, as they have that listed. ( no idea if they have a steering link listed though, tierods yes, but the odd little drag link type thing probably not)

Sorry about the slow reply but have been running around in the mud at Rotarua winch comp.
My mate has a strange motor as well, it has a side draft and lays a lot flater than an LJ50 motor, I think it came out of a van.
I would post a picture of my engine bay but I dont know how :?
My motor has a down draft carb and sits on the same angle as the 50, the only difference with mine is it has electonic ignition and air con.

he's like a bloodhound on those 50 parts.......

police were gonna try and train him as a sniffer, he's that good!!!

but they found that he could only smell engine parts

Hey, yep they showed up last week 8)

Big thanks to you and Smurf for that, heaps of great stuff there!!!!

Theres a good presure plate there that can be recond, the radiator is not bad, conrods are all fine, 5 good pistons and one of the cranks is in great shape ready for some new bearings. Very pleased, thanks heaps.

My spares now consist of two transfercases, two gear box's, one complete engine, 3 part engines, two alternators, one carb, three second hand water pumps, two new water pumps, complete gasket set, 4 complete diffs, set of drive shafts, steering box, steering links, two speedo's/instrument clusters, steering column and the list goes on. Should keep it going for a while longer.

Looking forward to building up the new engine!!!!!!!!

a VERY carefull port job, don't wanna loose preciouse torque, so some research got to happen before we get funky with the die grinder

That and maybe a lightened fly wheel. Make a cool comp engine for launching at stuff, but maybe not so good for crawling around in the bush??

Also thinking about having a go at setting an IDA carb up on it as well as adapting some better reed valves to fit.

The cranks are good up to 15,000rpm before they fall to bits, and at the mo it pulls 9000rpm, but all the powers gone by about 6500rpm. Ithink its the small bore size on the carb thats the issue there, but on the same note, that small bore size contributes alot to the torque down low.

Gonna be interesting, i have 3 spare blocks to play with ports on, so if it goes wrong i have a standard one for back up

In the meen time i gotta source main, big end and little end bearings, crank seals, rings and maybe even new sleeves as all the pistons i have are max oversize, and i think most of the blocks need a rebore rather than just a hone. Either that or get pistons machined up out of blanks.

Anyways, lotsa thinking and measuring up of parts and tolerences on the stuff i have to see whats good and whats not and where i can save a buck to spend on something else etc etc.

Been a while since anything got posted in this thread :D

I think the only major work thats been done since that last post is that i have got the centers of my brand spanking new rims hacked out and reversed, new RS5000 shocks, front bump stop spacers added, and strengthened the front bar. Must get some more pic's.

I have just been driving it heaps around my parents place getting a feel for it. Its definatley starting to feel familiar when i get behind the wheel now, and i think its starting to show (i'm starting to break stuff  )

I've had it on two wheels a few times but managed to steer it out of a roll, so got a pretty good feel for the stability.

At the ORE BBQ, as you may have read, i smashed both U/J crosses out of the front D/S and ripped the T.Case out of its mounts.

I'm now running with my dodgy spare drive shafts untill i can find some SJ410 shafts but luckly had a couple of mint T.Case mounts on my spare T.Case.

Today i blew a rear axle with out trying, which is quite possibly a result of the hard hit that did the above damage.

Either way, its no good, especially as i have a super charger scheme in the pipe line.

So i'm on the look out for LJ80 diffs.

Why??

As they are a straight bolt in job, 100mm wider than the LJ50 diffs, stronger due to being designed to handle an 800cc 4stroke engine, and my diff heads with the 2stroke ratios will bolt in.

SJ gear has an offset front diff head, so not really an option other wise i would slap 410 diffs under it.

Fair call, but seen a few SJs run hilux running gear and the rear of a hilux has a centred diff (unlike an LJ the SJ has a RH side output from transfer). The rear drive shaft is heaps shorter than the front therefor the speeds your LJ is going too run it shouldnt be an issue?? (assuming it doesnt go much over 50kph?) I think thats clear :? rum

or is there sump/X members in the way?? Mind you rear Sj is offcentre to LJ transfer but still shouldnt be an issue again with speeds you run??

How wide do you want to be ? Get two 410/413 (think they are the same length) axles and make two longs sides to it to centre the diff head , a bit harder with the rear but maybe a put a vitara into the rear with the 410/413 long side to move it over a bit also .

Will measure tonight the difference in length of the front of the 413 shafts , tell you how much wider it would be centered .

The other option for narrow rear centre is the rear diff of a van , I think they use 410 diff heads , not sure thou , but they are centred .

Its all in the name of science 8)

The main problem in the front is the width of the chassis rails, the 410 diff, by my ruff calculations, would sit directly under the chassis rail. A spring over would cure that problem, but defeat the purpose of the execise which is partly to gain stability.

I better have another look at that though ;) I have a spare chassis or two to play with after all

Ok , bugger the front is the one off center more than the rear . Two long side shafts would make you 300mm wider than stock 410 :( ( you did say you wanted stability ) .

So short of cutting down two 410 shafts to make a centre diff head life could be a bit of a bugger .
A vitara shaft is about the same length as a shortside 413 so thats know help .
Still the van rear diff may be stronger than the lj50 one . Anyone know the width of them ? You would need to put a 5 stud rear drum on there thou ( lucky on a zuk the studs are in the drum eh ) .
