Put up a services thing on TM, but also auctions, then tell anyone who asks a Q them to go to your service listing and call/email/contact you using the details on there :mrgreen:

Well some of you might know of Sams 130 Surf I had a play with the suspension on.
This thing......

Anyways..... I used a 3 link front and rear set up. I had a yarn to my certifier before I started to see if he could see any potential problems. Go for it, I know what your works like blah blah blah. So I did.
Sams takes it for cert and fails on a few things. Inclueding 3 link front and rear!!! Bugger.

Both front and rear have an off set top link. Certifier worried about the axle tubes twisting under braking. Ok I understand where he is coming from but the front diff is trussed and the lower link mounts are below the centre of the axle tubes. I didnt think it would be a problem. Long story short, its in the shed getting a 4 link front.
The rear is only offset 130mm from the centre of diff. If the top link is in the centre of the diff its all good, but not off set. So Im doing that while Im at it.

Also........ front panhard rod needs to be lengthened (probably should've though of that first time round ) and a brace between the coilover hoops.
So hows that for a lesson on how not to make money?? :cry:


The rear 3 link is now sorted. Turned into a bit of a mission to get the X member up over the tank,but I think its ruff enough

now that sucks ass,sorry to hear mate.ive had similar issues with certifiers saying one thing then changing their mind and of course its us that ends up out of pocket.nice work with centring the rear top link though.looks very pro

Im just upset cos I've aced the six certs before it :mrgreen:
Had dealings with Don before and Wayne is much better to deal with and is a good guy to go with it. Shit happens aye, sort it and move on :D Wont be doing any more 3 link fronts :lol:

Not quite. Its a parallel 4 link so still needs the panhard :wink:

Hey Tom, this problem could be modelled and finite element analysis undertaken on it to determine the twist in the housing. It would be good if you could find out from your cert guy what the allowable amount of twist in the axle housing is during braking.

I've bought a kit from the states that allows me to put a 3 link front end on my truck so I might be going through the same problem. I have FEA ability so might be able to come up with an answer, it won't be immediate as I have to do it in my limited spare time but it can be done.

yeah it is an interesting one. I was going to model it in Autodesk inventor and do FEA analysis on it but it becomes very difficult to do it properly. If you can be bothered to draw it up i would try but the amount of time it would take to do wouldn't be worth the effort in putting one more link in. You would need to work out the actual loads that are being subjected upon the axle etc and that would be hard to try and prove. We did manage to convince him on the some geometry issues but that was much easier to prove then that. In the long run it is probably better as it will give a much more balanced loading on the axle.

I suspect he's worried about the box section where the upper link is connected to. Strange due to the fact that Hilux front axles come with torque link on them from factory so you'd think the housings could withstand a good amount of torque.

I don't know what qualifications the bloke who "assessed" your work, but any one who has cut a diff housing up before would not be questioning its ability to resist warping under braking force even with an offset top link.

Do these guys make these calls from "gut feel" or is there a bit of science behind the madness. I can't imagine that they should be given the power to say yay or nay to a cert because they "Don't like how it looks"

If it were not for the fact I am flat out at work I would love to model the housing and put it through stress analysis for you in solidworks, but I put money on it that the lower links would collapse long before the housing reaches its yeild strength.

If that being the case, the only test that should matter is how it drives, if it is stable under heavy braking, there is no problem with the setup.

I cant really get drawn into this discussion but I do agree with the above statements.
As Sams truck is now a 4 link front I wont push it anymore, but I'm not giving up on the 3 link front, just playing the game for now 8)
