At the risk of offending the sensibilities of those who have posted in this forum, may I make it explicitly clear to the wider public that this is not an ORE National 4x4 Assoc. trip.

 I would also strongly encourage intending participants to exercise very careful consideration of any proposal to head upstream from Ashley Gorge; this area is ecologically sensitive and is bordered by DOC + forestry reserves.

All good as long as we stick to the track tho

And for those that think their truck might struggle some decent tow points would be a real good idea. I'm sure that between us all there will be heaps of recovery gear, but we wont need it cause we wont get stuck aye

My above post has been edited, I have since been made aware of concern from "other parties" of the damage caused by 4wd's upstream of the campground, I highly reccommend staying downstream of the campground

I'm sure most if not all on the forum take the tread lightly philosophy seriously and don't want to cause any damage, a trip from rangiora up to the gorge sounds all good and you can count me in

See here on this map.
Where the road crosses the river, just out of of Rangiora.
Follow Ashley Street from the High St intersection and you shouldnt go wrong.
From memory you turn off to the right, off the end of the bridge when you go over it to enter the riverbed.

That's the 'easiest' most common sense way. I think now you can also turn left and go along there a wee bit and get out to the river bed - used to have wire rope up but when I was down there the other day it looked open.

The most fun way is to turn off left just before the river and go through gate and over the stopbank and through the willows, up the bank and through the river! That's the route I take when I can't be bothered using the bridge.

Used to be a nice access via a short but thrilling rock crawl down into the river from the domain picnic area on the right before the bridge but they blocked that off with bigger rocks during the swimming season.
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.
