isnt that just sport though?
just like the allblacks, they are the elite top of the sport and cop all the attention, sponorship etc doesn,t mean the rest of us can,t get there at normal level and kick the ball around.
The problem with this is when the "All Blacks" of the selected few with big sponsers decide they want to prove that they are the best they will come and play with the "normal level" players and there will still be the same problems as now except the gap will get bigger.
However I would have liked to have been invited into invitation only but if they are only taking "flash" trucks I can't see this happening which is a shame. Be nice if the TV could show still show some cheap competitive 4x4ing.
All in all though I take my hat off to anyone who gets out there and organises any event for whatever reason, and I will go to as many as I am able or invited to, just for the fun of competeing.

You're missing the point a little bit, there won't be anyone with "big sponsors" until they get the invite. Unless there are one or two who already had sponsors on board who may now want to up the ante. I wouldn't sell myself short if I were you, I have no real idea who may get an invite or what the criteria might be, maybe you will get one and can choose to take your own chances?

I don't think I've missed the point but frankly i don't care, the more events the better, especially if I did get an invite! But from a discussion point, if my understanding is right there will still be a national series and an invite only TV covered series. The ones who do well in the invited series I would be very surprised if they and the rest did not enter the National series especially as they will have far more resorces available to them from sponsers. The gap will get bigger because of their resources and the chance for the rest of the pack to "shine" and get an invite will just keep getting harder.
So like it or not the TV is still dictating the sport and the ones at the top of their game now, who will be the ones seen on TV, will be there for along time and will not be attracting average Joe Blogs off the couch and into the Mud unless he has got deep pockets to buy a big shiny rig with more pull than a 16 yr old on viagra, where as in truth you can go out in a rig that owes you less than a motor cross bike and have a lot of fun and be reasonably competitive.
I suppose we could always make it like golf, if you sign up for the invite only your classed as professional and therefore go into a different class at nationals level?

yeah i know what u are saying but deep pockets rule motorsport, always have, suxs to be me most of the time
its just that 4x4 has been sitting in the back blocks and has come of age and caught up.
big money hasn,t hurt Joe bloggs watching the v8,s or f1, superbike etc etc etc etc . won,t hurt 4x4 either.
attendance? i think is sky rocketing?
it was watching it on tv got me involved
mx race i entered once, i got blown away by by the kings (all three of them)
they are the best in this country, they worked the hardest, trained the hardest and have the best bikes.
was like a hundred other events i could have entered inseatd and prob had more fun at............
the way i see it, Cowper and the other guys that will get a invite to this series, they are the countrys best 4x4 drivers.
they beat you and me!!
in a competition always going to be a winner and a loser.
i,d rather everyone who finished in front of at the last trial didn,t show up again, but once u at the top only one place to go.
and i still think, more so in this sport then anyother, a good car and running cost for a season are in reach for anyone who works hard enuff.

I agree with you entirely but I personally don't know anyone who sits in front of the TV watching the V8's and thinks "I like the look of that I think I'll have a go' it's just not concevable but as you said;
it was watching it on tv got me involved
while watching 4x4 on TV at the moment it appears quite achievable, maybe thats why numbers are up.
From my point of few I would like to see the young feller who came in an excellent second in Napier given some good exposure. Theres no bling there, He's got a rubber chicken on the front of his truck for goodness sake, thats true 4x4 nature. same as most of the guys interviewed on the Whangarei DVD, they all said they love the Friend ships made etc, will this stay the same when its only a select few who get to perform for the camera?

just a thought, I travel around and attend quite a few trials as a spectator. One of the things I notice is that the more successful a team is, the less approachable - at least during competition - they are. In a reasonable amount of competition I have done myself in other fields but even in club champs I have always found it impossible to seriously try and win as well as be able to be as sociable as I would be in other circumstances. At any level of competition, I believe if two guys are equipped in the same way, skilled the same, trained the same, it is only the mindset which will separate them at the finish line.
If the fun and friendship is what you're looking for, you'll find it in the nationals just as you will on a club run and that is a good thing. Hard as this is for me to say, and for you to take I suspect, you're in the way of the real competitors so they will go their own way. I guess if they do come back to compete against you in the nationals and I assume they will, they can take a more relaxed approach than they do now and it will be even more fun.

its interesting to hear that from a spectators point of view
coz I see it from a competitors point of view all the time
you can usually talk and chat during the day with those in your group and have a good laugh and share tips and compare thoughts on the hazard, but if you end up with some of the front runners, then you just don't even bother talking to them coz they are in a different zone and don't want to know ya.
I love the social side of it.
you can make great friends in one day of hanging around with a complete stranger in your group and thats the really good side of the sport which is what 90% of the competitors comment about on telly and in magazines when asked why they do it.
lets not let a little square box that sits in the corner of ya lounge ruin what has become great comradery

I couldn't agree more with these comments about a fun friendly sport, and that is what the Tv show used to show with the Laurie Sanson series and light hearted look at the Nationals, the show promoted the sport, now (and I am only assuming) the show will be about promoting a selected few in a sport.
And I do class myself as a real competitor, I actually finished the season quite well, with a smile on my face and talking to anyone who approached us,and maybe I will get an invite but if I have to choose between the two, 1 going to the Nationals with your mates testing yourself and your truck and having a good time or 2 going to an invite only so I can get my ugly mug on the box. I would choice option 1.
I know 1 of the reasons they are doing this is so like you say the rest of the pack don't get in the way and they can all compete together and do the hazards at as close the same condition as each other, fair enough but what happens when a lesser class gets a better draw than the top guns, you could end up with the entire "D" class getting beaten by "C" class, could get nasty. If the current national system is so wrong way is it that the same few always end up at the top?

i really think it has t got to a point where people can see themselves promoting the sport and making money doing so, otherwise it would stay the same format as we have now, it's people why a driven by the dollar, and maybe it's what's best for the sport, who knows by why re invent the whell when its working, maybe the coverage isn't that flash, but that can be sorted. the only reason to create another series is because there is money the be had.
