hi richard i think ive just clicked where the chasm is...
i lived with a mate in hukarere for 6months running a truck out of the coast for stu drummond,we lived on snowy river road just over the bridge around the bend and spent alot of time 4wding on days off in the area....
from memeory you follow one of those roads near the old fuel pump? which leads open farmland near a shed and the grey,we crossed the grey there once but couldent go far on the other side because of the trees, boulders from that slip...
have i got the correct spot or totaly confused? if yes what a bloody achievement mate well done! thats a massive slip..

You are in the right area. From the shed you can get onto the chasm track by driving up the chasm which we have cleared of trees. This is not the Bulletproof chasm track.
To get on the chasm track you take the next turn right past the old fuel depot and go down the Staircase to the alexander and Grey River, cross the Grey and this takes you to the Clarke river.
If you look in Brians shed the water level is drawn in the rafters when the Chasm washout blocked the Grey for 2 hrs
Cheers Richard

Re: bulletproof Chasm track re opened
This week on the news I noticed the road to Fox Glazier has been completely washed away so wondered about the Chasm track.
Looking at the Grey river flow , the Grey River rose and peaked at 3700mm in just a couple of hours at Waipuna on monday night so there must have been a cloud burst so anyone going into the track will need to be well equipped and prepared for anything.
Cheers Richard

Nah, going to head up to Karamea with the wife and boys to totally chill out, doing a bit of bushwalking, fishing, chillin' and more chillin'. Got a serious promotion at work into executive nursing management this week hence the timeout with the whanau, chillin'. 4wdriving just seems a bit too hectic at the moment

Not for the faint hearted. Good winch required as one bank out of chasm is very steep and needs to be winched up or down.
Does any one know condition of the Chasim track? (Jan 2009) Just did basic doc track Denniston, napolian hill,no name rd,waiutu rd. and found them a bit boring. Can anyone give me some more track names similar to Chasim? or is anyone doing any of these in the near future?

Re: bulletproof Chasm track re opened
Just an update on the track.
A group of top of the south 4 wheelers went through the track last weekend and hear-say is they have cut a route around the bog section in the bush because they were bogged down. Maybe a little indiscreet considering this is a sensitive area and I have publicly told people on this site not to cut trees.
All I will say is ,it is nothing to do with me .
Cheers Richard

Not a club trip then?
Re: bulletproof Chasm track re opened
hi just to put it straight the bog they cut around was not on the chasm track it was on private farm land and they were opening up some over grown tracks to use at a later date so you guys may get to have a crack at them

That is not correct. I have talked to the ones involved and know exactly where it is . The new piece runs along the top of the Chasm on the northen side.
This track does damage to trucks and anyone doing it has to accept this and not cut trees and try and make easier routes around obstacles otherwise DOC will shut it off.
It is a" Remote Zone" and is protected but we still go through because historally the track has been used for years.

We all know that some trees where cut when the track was originally opened.

Hi Al
The whole purpose of the track was to log the area and bring trees out when Rob Muldoon was the prime minister, and over 1 million dollars was spent putting a bridge across the Clark and building the track.
The Greenies stepped in and no logging took place at all. It was then that the area was rezoned to protect it.
It was declared a "REMOTE ZONE" which is next down the list from a " WILDERNESS AREA" where nothing is allowed to happen, not even walking tracks.
We don't won't to lose this area through stupid actions just for the sake of it.
Cheers Richard

Re: bulletproof Chasm track re opened
its such a brilliant track best one i have ever done (well never made it out of the chasm yet) but bought winches so we ready to tackle it this weekend,.... hopefully we make it. some of them drop offs make the butt really pucker. not for the faint hearted
Re: bulletproof Chasm track re opened
A group of us did it last weekend, If anything i would say that its getting easier. Most of us managed to drive the first part up out of the Chasm
without to much hassle. Although the bog along from there is getting quite cut up. Have to watch out for trees though
Lucky i know a good windscreen guy

Hi Jase, welcome to the club. I broke a windscreen when I took Jafa through the track in January.

Last time I went through it was getting quite washed out on the track down to the Grey River and we had to go around a couple of washouts. Has there been any more damage done with the water running down that side ?
Cheers Richard

Re: bulletproof Chasm track re opened
Hey Guys.
I am new to the club.
I have a 88 suzuki Samurai all kitted out.
We(zuk club) did the Bulletproof Chasm track in the weekend. 5 trucks went through starting at the Grey River end. Started at 10am and set up camp after dark that night at the washout before the chasm. The track has changed alot recently up the staircase part due to more rain. One part where the track used to run up the stream, the stream is now 4m deeps.
Had a great time, heaps of winching. Make sure you have a 25m rope for winching as one part definately needs this. Any questions just ask and can answer for anyone going in. Makes a great overnight trip as we did.
Cheers Kalim

Was Gary there ? I sent him a DVD in Oct showing the track.
I received a letter from DOC yesterday about the CMS for the West coast and they have altered the color on the map for this area and it is now officially a "Back Country Remote Zone" for the next 10 years .

Re: bulletproof Chasm track re opened
well he did stop about a dozen times cos various bits and pieces had fallen off his truck
its amazing in a few months how different the track is now. from up the grey end is pretty much winching because of the condition of the creek

Re: bulletproof Chasm track re opened
I wouldn't advise going through the Chasm today. The Grey river is currently running at 4500mm so anyone doing the track in the near future will need to be prepared for alot of washout damage.

Hi Al
It has just been mentioned on TV1 news that Waipuna was one area hit with heavy rainfall so I would hate to think what might have happened to the track.
