here are some more idea's (this may work especially if we split them into groups...
4wd'ing .... send an open truck thru the donut hole first (and ask if anyone wants a ride)
tug of war (by hand) with a big muddy bog in the middle for the losers
crossing a muddy bog (team effort) ...one of those team building challenges? 3 planks and some rules which require some thought....
activities on the airstrip ( truck pulling contest, tirfor races?
Setup some ropes up a steep track and a team effort to get everyone up, prize for the fastest team
Lunch is easy, we can have both 44 Gallon drums going...

Need to get resource consent in by Wednesday morning at the latest, need to know route we will be taking and how many trucks as well , standard $15.00 charge per truck and there is a $5.00 club charge, $20.00 for aka's trip plus gas/diesel.
Need to think about lunch and drinks as well, not just for the kids but also the adults, thoughts on a big lunch at Rallywoods or the Orange hut?

can we get 46 spare seats in trucks?, that would be the determining factor for an Aka's trip... + a few spare in case
I have 1 spare in the Lexpos (3 if I bolt the back seat back in)

Good ideas Jerry - you are onto the type of the thoughts I had.
The 30-40 will must likely include the adults. We have normally had 30ish all up for the previous 4 years but last year hit 50 so its a bit unknown this year as bookings are still coming in and young people leave it to the last minute to decide their holidays!
If we have about 10 trucks that can each take an average of 3-4 passengers that would be enough seats for any activity that will include every one.
You can leave us to cover the lunch - That's one thing we can pre-plan - We'll bring a cut lunch or a build-your-own-burger type thing for the whole lot of us, our cook will be with us too and can get things set up while some of the action happens, the menu for the whole camp is actually vegetarian so will be colourful and varied! In fact we can supply lunch for everyone as a contribution for efforts. A bbq or two might be ideal for getting some warm tucker especially if its a cooler day.
Also what's the options if case of rain (apart from more mud) how much shelter is there for gathering around and lunch etc?

if its Rallywoods then there is a gazebo thingy and a hut thingy and a hanger thingy...... if its wet then more mud.... just make sure they bring a change of clothes....
reckon we can sucker 1 or 2 of the organising adults into going for a ride thru the donut hole

Its getting warmer here each day so should be ok.
We can supply cooks if you want .... althoough they may be a bit grumpy .... we can do hot roast vege's if you want as well.

If rallywoods is the venue Green hut is around 15x10m and the gazebo BBQ is about 6x6m so there would be ample wet weather shelter, theres a generator, toilets and fires and stuff there

Hehe most likely! We only get 'youth friendly' leaders so they have a bit of a spirit of adventure in them. I know of one of the girls in particular that would be keen too!
I'm confident of rain. Last time I was in Welly I crossed over on the ferry it was fine when I was up on the boat but by the time I got down to the vehicle and drove ashore it was raining, went to Karori for evening in the rain then to Kelson for the night - rained all night. Next morning I went up to Woodville, once over the Rimutakas was a lovely day and 'apparently' was fine in Welly too. Coming back through Pukerua Bay into Welly that evening I hit rain again, rained all night. Up to Levin the next day and nice weather, 'apparently 'also nice in Welly. Pukerua bay that evening: rain again. Early next morning drove to the airport in the rain and blasting wind and flew back to sunny Canty.

I think there is a "Rain" theme here, seems like every time you are in Wellywood it rains....

I would really enjoy helping out with this as I have worked with troubled youth in different roles so I understand satisfaction that you get from it. However I can't make to much in the way of promises as I return from holiday a day or so before this.
As well as the outdoor 4x4ing stuff did you think about gettting the kids to do a bit of community service while up there, a bit of track clearing, firewood, painting the shed, anything like that. They get a real sense of achievement and the simple joy of doing something for somebody else. but I'm sure that you know all this
As for bush walks, orientation, etc umm do you want these guys walking around in the bush alone?? I can't see many of the Welly crowd, eg Jerry, Curly or myself for that matter running through the bush. If you have ever steps more than three feet off the track you would know that this is mostly still primary bush and it's not exacty flat

Good ideas. Our camp theme is 'Make a Difference' and emphasis is the difference they can make in their own lives as well as for others. All mornings except Sunday are occupied with classes etc. Two of the afternoons (Thurs and Fri) we are aiming to do community assistance around the Levin/Otaki area (if any of you know of projects or people needing a hand we would really appreciate any tips). Also having some of them running a Children's Holiday Club for younger kids. Saturday afternoon some will be visiting and singing/playing at an old folks home and talking a walk.. I had also considered doing a firewood run - prepare, split, transport, unload and stack wood for those who are a bit harder off, but being from down this way I don't have the contacts for that in that area.
Back to Sunday tho, A bit of track clearing/firewood combined would work and then seeing a vehicle make it up the track. Painting is also a good idea. If some one is able to coordinate it I'm sure they could get most of it in the right place - make sure its green paint for the green hut! One year we renovated a Chalet on the camp ground. The caretakers dubiously allowed us to do it since it was so rough anyway. So we got to painting, making curtains, pictures for the walls, new steps outside, restored furniture etc (
http://ybc.autumnleaves.co.nz/05/Ybcphotoscr.html) They did an excellent job and the camp ground was most impressed. That was a whole week project.
The secret is to keep them all busy at once. Best not to have them off in the scrub alone. I know one young girl who got lost in Welly bush and they were locals.

Been watching this and will support 200%. Can either bring down the V8 with 3 spare seats or the shiny prado with 5 spare.
My 2 cents RALLYWOODS

If they are in class (and working) the other days then a day of mud filled fun probably would be the best.....
did we add mudfights to the list (it wasn't me I didn't start it

)
Nick .... Bring the V8

my previous thoughts were along the lines of AKAs , but it may seem rallywoods is better now.
are you coming down for the day fweddy, or is it planned to be an overnighter.
if its a day then I still think the AKAs would be a better option considering that you wil be in Otaki, otherwise its a long road trip to Rallywoods.
thoughts ????

How long are the Welly mornings?
Does someone have a map of the tracks so I can picture them a bit. I take it Akas and Rally link up there somewhere? I was picturing Akas at the Hutt end of that Waikanae/Hutt Road?
