When I had my head done on the 1kz in Queenstown it cost me $2,500, worth getting a second opinion?

Just the head, bolts, gasket kit and head machining comes to about $1,365 plus labour. Did you get all the extras done at the same time? The wise thing to do would be to get a second opinion but it's already in pieces across the mechanic's floor so I'd have to get the guy to put everything back together again to take it somewhere else, which would be extra labour and then the next quote might even be higher. :?

Heath: yeah agreed. The head and cambelt I'm putting in have done a big fat zero kilometres which is approximately the same as a brand new car! I appreciate all the offers though. Cheers for those.

I also get the benefit of receipts for all this work done which makes it a lot easier to sell in the future. Although I'll be wanting to hang on to it for life now that I've put so much into it.

P.S. This is about the standard of my "courtesy" car in the meantime:

So you can see why I'm dying to get mine back!

Over 100,000 KM's or 10 years old, I was told you can't get mechanical warranty...

MTF do one, up to 16yo and 225km at time of purchase, just needs a check first, and claim limit may be lowered if modified, but can be purchased privately or through dealer.
Limits are: up to 125km $8000
175km $5000
225km $3000
AFAIK this is at time of purchase, and up $20k limit for each policy

Yeah I was offered a warranty for just over a grand. I'd had a warranty on the car I had before this one and I just thought, nah I won't need it. Apparently I was wrong! It wouldn't have covered the cambelt, radiator cleaning or injector servicing though.

Chopper01, I could also buy my fiance's car for that price ... twice!! Luckily she's more feeling sorry for me than sorry for the bank account! That's why I'm marrying her!

But what does your warranty cover?
I've never bothered with them. But a mate had his subaru crap out and it still cost him $1500 for everything the warranty didn't cover.

Some of them would just drop in an equivalent second hand engine.

They generally cover anything that is "sudden and unexpected" i.e. if the problem couldn't have knowingly been prevented. They also exclude all rubber - tyres, belts, hoses etc. and anything that breaks through standard wear and tear.

I had a subaru that overheated, blew the radiator and damaged the waterpump. The warranty covered all of that but it can be sketchy - technically I saw the temp guage rise before the radiator blew so I could have prevented it by pulling over and stopping!

You also have to follow a strict pattern of insuring and servicing the car with certified mechanics while it's under warranty but that's just common sense anyway really - unless you service your vehicle yourself and you're not a registered mechanic.

Just like insurance, it can be open to loop holes etc. I think in my case with the hilux I would be covered for the head as it could be proven to have been like that at the time I bought it. I wouldn't be covered for the injectors as we discovered they needed servicing before they broke, or for the cambelt as it's a belt! Or the radiator as it's just dirty from general wear and tear ...

It's ready!! Sweeeeet.

It was cheaper too - $4150 as they did it quicker than they thought they would. Now I just have to go pick it up and take it for a running-in session. Can't wait! :D

As long as you get back what you paid for the warranty out of them, what does it matter?
In the 6 vehicles I've owned that I had warranties on, I've saved over $15k in repairs, and would have paid well under $1000 for the excess required

Ahhhhhhh I've got my motor back! I'm gonna drive it like I'm driving over eggshells for a while! I'm just hoping it lasts for a touring trip up to Golden Bay next month. Can't wait. :D

I'm taking careful measures to ensure things stay cooler in the engine bay. Even this will help a little I reckon! Surely it'll breathe a bit easier now...
