Well it's not charging still but he has brakes!! So he is going tomorrow. If anyone has a multi-meter that they can bring tomorrow so we can test it that would be great!!

my good mate bought one and went all around nz, he said on steep gnarly hills , like in the sth some where and on the rimus it got fkd up and told him to turn off ( the side of the hill!!) , other high profile people have tried to get here and not made it, i dont know what gps they used though , you have been to my place skid it aint that hard,

i would be trialing all 3 over a month were u go , and then let us all know eh!!

I spent a $1000 on my nuvi 760 and topo maps and wouldn't do anything different if buying another one. I know exactly where I am at all times on or off road.

Does the Nuvi 760 give you the ability to record your own track logs/trails?

The Garmin comes with software called "mapsource" which allows you to draw a route or put in way points and then transfer them to favorites on the 760.

As you are driving along you just push "Save' and it records where you are etc

I haven't played around with it too much because all walking and 4 wheel drive tracks are already on the topomaps.

Got a Uniden GNS8350 Car Navigation System. Arrives tues. Only cost me $100 so not really caring how shit it is as long as it'll tell me where roads are. $100 is cheaper than buying a couple of DECENT maps for auckland, hams, welly etc.

I've had the 8350 for a couple of years now, and it can be a PITA at times, but overall, it's not a bad unit for the price. Came in handy over in oz too.

I use a Navman N40i which I have unlocked....
It now runs both the original Navman street maps.
And also Ozi Explorer... And calibrated maps topo maps (free except for download data usage) ...
Plus can run other applications.
Still gets signals in forests....

Cost was about $250 for used navman.....Other software was free.....If you know where to look.

Works for me...

Apparantly the uniden unit can be hacked- it runs windows CE and can handle the odd program from your desktop.

I got the Garmin nuvi and the Garmin 60CSx waterproof handheld gps's.
I brought the waterproof handheld for when I'm on the water either in the kayak or the boat. Not sure I'd want to use the nuvi on a muddy track in the truck or going through deep river crossings. (not that I do anyway) though if I did, I'd pick the 60CXs for that. Not sure the nuvi would handle a good splash of mud or water.
