It will help if you all can give me some feed back on what works before I shell out the big dollars.
I live in sunny Taupo, but it's not sunny all the time and I love to play in some mud, so thay will have to be good in the mud and stuff, but will not be used on the road and road noise is not a problem as I will not hear it in the tow truck.

Simex XT's 10.5" by whatever rim width you have. :o

By using exsisting rims hoping to save money but might be better to buy a cheaper tyre (silverstone) & new rims rather than more exspensive simexs.

Silverstone XT'd tend to wear quicker as they are lighter and hench not as much rubber but more silicon etc. Once past 1/2 life they also tend to wear quicker.

Driving on the road on underinflated Silverstone or Simex XT's causes both of them to wear real quick.

I ran silverstones on the safari for two years. They have about 3mm of tread left in the centre but the outside lugs are still chunky as. They were a little too good at digging with the weight of the pig on them. They were really bad on slippery sidlings and absolutwely shit on wet rocks. I have gone back to the Kumho KL71 now that they make a 35" tyre. I found these to be a good allround tyre. When I get some more cash (after Cape York trip in July) I will invest in a set of Simex Et's. I ran the silverstones on 7" rims (never popped a bead) as they continually popped beads even with tubes in on 8" rims.
Am actually going to put them up for sale on TM this weekend with rims.

Al, how bad was the wear rate on the KL71's? Did you use them as daily tyres or run a 2nd set?

i have to say the maxis ones i have on the back of my v8 commodore have been the best wearing and best tyres for hanging onto the road i have owned.

What sort of Km's could i expect on a swb Safari running the big horns of 35x12.5 dimensions??

id say a good 60,000 plus kms if wheel align, tyre pressure etc are keep in good order, alot comes down to how its driving at the end of the day and how you maintain your truck.

i sell alot of 4wd stuff through my work and Maxxis is by far the biggest selling 4wd tyres by a long run,you cant beat them for value for money when you can get them normally acouple of hundy cheaper than the likes of Goodyears,Coopers etc

lots of opinion's. heres one more.
simex and silverstones are digging tyres! i wouldn't stick them on a club truck, as i would sooner have a little more contact area on the ground. One of the guys mentioned diff in size's and i agree, new silverstons on 16" were still smaller than well worn simex's standing side by side, both 35"
if you go with a digger tyre, forgetting cost and wear, I'd go with simex, because the more open tread in the silverstones won't do you any favours in a heavy truck. my lux runs 3psi on the rear with silverstones, awsume traction, but a very light truck.
My first tyre choice for a trailered truck would be mickey t's, they have brand new models with great side bitters and look like they will clear mud really well.
Motortech 4x4 are the nz agent for them.
for driving and mud work, i like km2's the new ones have improved sidewall strength, and for such an agressive (mud not extream) they are real quite on the road.
I'd look around and see what the other guys are using and what works - everbobdy will have a different opinion though - good luck.

Hay Kiwi
I've been running Cooper STT's in 35's for the last 11 years (old style, with the good tread patten) and they have been unreal, ran BFG for years before that but they became a joke after driving on the coopers, Pretty pricey now tho, and the new style doesn't seem to work nearly as well as the old girls. If ya after a radial I'd probably go for something like those Kumho mud jobs, im thinking of giving them a lash for a all rounder next time.
Good luck on the search for the perfect tyre mate,

PS, Got a matching set of 5 Cooper STT muds in 35x12.5x15 with about 5mm of tread in the guts and about 20mm odd on the side lugs if anyones interested, lookin for about $450 :) (can bring to chch)
