Recently my '66 109 S2a played "pin the landy on the milk tanker rear bumper", Eek!! Quite sad because she has recently had $$ spend on all 4 four brakes, with new shoes and everything too. I'm going to cut my losses.
Link to another Series with DIY disk brake conversion:
http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=22910I'm now going 4 point disk brake, ideally with Defender parts so repairs and upgrades are easy to source. Haven't yet decided about the hand brake.
A few questions oldblue regarding your disk brake conversion:
Fits both front and rear axles?
Fits free wheeling front axles?
Fit Series 2a (4cyl & 6cyl) axles or only Series 3?
What is involved in getting the new setup WOF certified?
Compared to your typical mid 90's Japanese car brake performance, how good are they at stopping a 2+ ton Landy?
What kind of money are we talking about here to do the conversion?
Are there any issues with rims, turning circles, axle grinding, etc?
If I understand the posts right,
- my hubs will need some machining
- caliper mounting brackets need to be fabricated
- calipers come off a Toyota - which model & year?
- disk rotors come off what make and year vehicle or are they fabricated at a smelter?
I'm also thinking about upgrading the master cylinder to a defender unit, going to skip a S3 upgrade path.
Thanks

This info is about when I used to make Disc conversions (back in the 80s ) the lack of sales stopped when you could buy a 4x4 with disc's. I'm showing how I made them and may help others to do the same without big cost
#1 They were fitted to Short/wheel base's,
#2 Callipers were from Toyota Carola EE80 Fronwheel drive about 1984>.Single pot floating type, I made sure the Pads were soft XP compound or equal to an XP Grade this made all the differance to stopping distances.
#3 The back of the hubs need to be machined back to the inside of the hub flange and 104mm Dia as per drawings.
#4 This design only requires a 6mm flat calerper bracket.
#5 The disc's were cast at our local foundry from SG Cast Iron.
#6 Will suit 16" landrover wheels.
#7 My design is complyent with low volume user requirements, but all mods have to be certified on your truck after fitting

OK, there is some interesting conversions. I did mine and very simply as I hate spending money especially on POS Landys. I as in the first post machined off the back of the hubs to fit a Nissan safari disc 1986 leaf sprung front, drilled and tapped 6 holes in hub to bolt the disc on and used a 4mm spacer as well. I used the same Safari front calipers and got the engineer to make the mounting plate to bolt to the swivel hub. I had to die grind about a mill off the swivel housing so the body of the caliper didnt touch it. Now for all this to work with 15" rims a spacer has to be used and I used 25mm spacers. All the machining and fabrication of parts was only a few hundred. This works really well on my Landy as some will know. Now I did the same for rear, again really budget, used rear disco discs, calipers, hubs and stubs mounted onto a salsbury. I cut off the end of a Rangie diff that their brake caliper mounts to, cut it in half so as to use three mounting holes to the axle and machined it down to the right thickness, I did this with a angle grinder and file because Im such a scrooge!! I bought from BJ autos in Dunedin a drive cap 5 bolt 24 spline to go onto the Disco hub, got it all certed without any probs! Next time I have the wheels off I'll take photos and post. I priced the zuse kit from Aus and thats where that stayed and also because you have to use 16" rims. Anyone wanting to discuss this with me can ring 021457481. I am interested in the disc handbrake conversion if someone knows of a kit or has doneit. PS The stopping performance is awsome, no pulling, no constant brake adjusting and relining and the brake balance is just right without using and proportioning valves. A certifier tested and passed them. Marty Jones in Palmy Nth.

also thought i'd add in,
the conversion that im lookin at doing is to use parts that are the most popular to get ahold of i.e. disco parts so that way replacement parts are easy to get, im also going to suss out the disc handbrake conversion, now i know most ppl want a easy swap to be done n thats my main goal, n i know others have done their conversion's so i'd just like to state that i'm not trying to dismiss any of them just have a few other idea's i wouldnt might checking out, & one of the main goals i have is to make a kit that can easily be replicated but for all 5 points(2 fr, 2 rear + handbrake)

The Zeus kit is made in the UK. Sourcing it from there will cut down the supply chain and make things cheaper.

I'll keep an eye on this thread. Let us know how you get on with your five point conversion.
