I have what a believe to be a reasonably competitive truck. I was really keen to enter it against the guys from the north to see how I would measure up.
When we have a triall down south the entry fee is somewhere between $20 and $30 with no licnences etc. as opposed to $400 odd dollars. We have guys entering old suzukis , hiluxs etc and having a ball of fun. I believe that is what the sport should be about guys getting out there and having some fun!
I hope you now understand why no-one from the south is entering. I approached the organisers of the Dunedin one to see if we could work out a compromise, but apparently there wasn't.

fair enuff but how much do you think it is costing our north island boys to be down there for 3 1/2 to 4 weeks ???
if your guys southern zone spokes person had told you guys about it at the start of the seasons as they new about it then it would of cost you the same price for you to rally down thea .
now you wanted to work out a compromise with the organisers to get a cheaper rate right ??
do the north island boys get a cheaper rate for travling so far no they dont they still got to pay full price and with all there costing fuel accomadtion food etc etc it is well over the $520 dollars it would be costing you to do the 3 south island rounds
we have guys out there in standard suzukis and hiluxs and then we have boys in a 8 to 10grand truck like mine and then we have pepole in cowper trucks 100grand and we all have the same amount of fun but we dont mind paying because we all have a love for trialing

What do you get for you licence fees?...must be a bit for the $200 per vehicle

it all goes towards costs involved in running the sport.
payments for the comittee members, stationary costs, website expenses, various other running costs and up until last season they were paying for marshalls at each event as well.
Theres allsorts of hidden costs that have escalated over the years as the sport became more popular due to tv coverage etc etc
its still cheaper than other forms of motorsport, and as Bob mentioned above, we all do it coz we love it.
Like you guys enjoy the weekend bush bash or rock crawling etc etc etc, we all love our chosen sport/pastime, so we continue to pay to do it.
admittedly you will see a lot more sonsorship on vehicles these days, coz every little bit helps.

When I joined the Nelson club they belonged to the NZFWDA and were right into trials. For the trails around the country the club would sponsor some of the trucks.
At one of our meetings one member who didn't do trialing said I have spent x number of dollars modifing my truck to go 4 wheel driving ,so why should I have to sponser others just because their personal preference was trialing. So that was the end of trailing at Nelson. The committee decided there was no advantage belonging to the NZFWDA so pulled out and most other clubs in the South Is did the same so this day very few clubs belong to the Ass .
The only club that stayed with the Ass was MId Canterbury but over the last couple of years a few others have joined as well and I think By having trails down in the south the NZFWDA is hoping others will join but it will be a long road.
With low wages in Nelson even the ones interested in trialing can't afford to build a competitive truck let alone travel the country to compete.
In the south the winch challenges seem to be more popular and then you use your truck for ordinary trips.
So this might show why there is not much support for trialing.
Cheers Richard

if u join up at the start of the season it is $100 for a competition lincense for driver and the same for co driver so if u did 3 si rounds it is nt alot of money. iam 1 of the 3 si trucks that entered the si rallys. i also took my truck to round 1 in wellington what was nt cheap thanks to the ferry.. there needs to be too seperate comps 1 in the north and 1 in the south island. it is realy only the ferry that blows the budget for me

the nzfwda has nothing to do with were the rally are held it was south island clubs that wanted them held down there if these three rounds were held in the north island there would of easily bean 60 trucks compete there
as i no there is a a top south island c class truck that could easily take the c class title sitting in the shed and they were one of the teams that wanted south island trials
Cheers Richard
