Pics of my tube. Bit hard to photo at moment but but in next couple of weeks will be pulling things apart a bit to fix trans and will get better shots. Along with the fire wall plate the tube has brackets bolted to floor and trans tunnel beside seat. Hope that makes sense.

Image
Winch mount. Cross member is about 250mm forward of factory zuk one

Image
Shows where the tube goes into the passenger area. The little rise in the line is the rear of the trans tunnel.

Image
Where the tube runs across the foot well. It runs along the trans tunnel to about where the left of the photo is

Image
Where tube goes through fire wall. Ring is welded to tube and same shape one on other side of firewall and bolted together.

Image
Rope running along chassis rail, and you can sort of see where it exits tube. (Yes I know the shock bolt is missing.)

Any chance of a picture inside the engine bay looking down on the rope?? Be keen to see how much clearence you have from the exhaust.

I tried but with the heat sheild and inner gaurd it didn't really work. The rope is basically centered over the chassis rail and the exhaust is about 10mm from touching the rail. I have a heat sheild in between. Haven't really looked at how much heat is in there, to scared, but dont think it will be to bad. (engine is ca18 with modified extractors)

Yep, got the same problem, big extractors almost sitting against the chassis rail, so not much room.

What sort of pipe and what diameter did you use??

There is that too. If it works ok with your rope I'll buy my own   and arnt you selling your winch anyway:lol:  Will bring it back tomorrow if you want it.

DB in answer to your Q about tube its about 32mm id but check with Darinz as to exactly what it is as I used the same stuff as the cage cause it was what his bender fitted. Its probably over kill but I had it and it fitted the dies.

After chewing it over.................and over............and over, hours lying under the truck schemeing, measuring, bouncing from one idea to the next, comparing line speeds, weights, dimensions and thinking hard about what i wanted fom the truck, i decided the following:

I can't fit the M8275-50 on the Weapon.

The reasons for that are pretty generic to a suzuki, but i'll quicklty run through it:

The winch weighs 50kg with out rope, and the diameter of the drum is over 230mm.

50kg hanging infront of the front axle on a zook is a long way from being ideal. Anyone that has driven a Safari can tell you what its like to drive a massively front heavy truck.

Including the fairlead, i would have had at least 260mm extra hanging out the front of the truck.

Mid mounting was a good idea, in that it better distributes the weight of the winch bla bla bla, but running the rope under the truck, of through the truck, what a cnut of an idea. Its all exhaust and extractors under there, imagine grinding up a long hill on a hot summers day........... Melted Dynex Dux anyone???

So whats so special about an 8274 anyways?? Its ancient technology, superceeded by the compactness of planetary gear sets spawning the low mount winches. There are all sorts of issues with them, like the free spool popping out under load, the circlip comming off the brake and the brake exploding under load, the drum/moutings flexing under load, the housings cracking etc etc.

Saying that, its the comp guy's that have the problems with them though, not your average bush basher. Its the comp guy's that have them geared up and working above and beyond the limits there where designed for. After all a 8274 is only rated at 8000lbs.

Its big advantage is the large drum, especially for comp use.

The no load speed is good aswell (73 f/m), but under load, the majority of low mounts kick the pants of it!!

If it wasn't for the cool clicking/ratcheting noise they make while winching, i don't think anyone would bother??

So i have opted for a low mount, which i can fit 40m of rope onto, weigh's 30kg (20kg less than 8274), has a 6.8hp motor, a no load speed of 50 f/m and is a good few f/m faster over its entire range.

This has allowed me to mount the winch on the front, and keeps things simple.

The idea with the winch mount is that it has to be super light, and even easier to remove complete with the winch, and typically, as un-obtrusive as possible.

The un-obtrusive part was not going to happen. You can't hide a winch on the front of a zook

So this is it basically, it's bolted in place mid way through creation, in the pic's its minus a few brace's/mounts/ gussets etc, but you get the idea of where its sits. Finished pic's will follow later, :D

Image

Image

Image

This is it finished and painted. Sat the fairlead on there for photo purposes as it makes it a bit easier to make sense of

Image

Image

Yes, it looks odd, and flimsy, but it basically uses the winch itself as the majority of the structure.

The big issue with it (besides strength) is going to be the non-existant distance between the fairlead and the drum. It started off at 50mm out from the front of the winch, but i decided approach angle was more important than correct spooling, so i hacked it down to 5mm( just enough clearence for the heads of the bolts holding the fairlead on  ).

To remove it from the vehicle (with the winch attached to it) involves undoing 8 bolts and removing a couple of wires. Should be a ten minute job.

Image

Once removed, all thats left on the truck are these two little brackets welded to the bullbar: ( i didn't have any yellow paint  )

Image

I'm busting for the winch to turn up so i can jump on the scales and see how much it all weighs

Just waiting on the radiator and winch so i can put it all back together and get some finished pic's :D :D

You guessed it :D

Mike use's the same winch on his Cluclas vitara and it goes really wellm he's done five or 6 events with it and its still going strong.

After stripping a Warn XD9000 for servicing with a mate, i now realise that the Runva's are very well engineered with sealed bearings rather than just bushes, and the whole winch is a lot better sealed in general than than the Warn was. No noticeable difference in material or finish quality either.

I reckon you can't go wrong, and you also have good local support, with the 1 year full replacement warranty, and individual spares available on request.

My friends ordered one of these 9500 runva's,should get it this week, going on a safari.the spec sheet reads well,be interesting to see how it goes.

Might turn the weapon into a LWB

After its test run the other weekend, a few things came up that need attention.

High up on the list was the fan.

I new it was a tight fit in there, but once i put the bull bar on and the chassis started flexing, it was rubbing all over the place.

Its a 14" BMW push fan, its way to big, but it's awesome in terms of how much air it moves!!!

Image

Image

I did some blade swapping (fluke) between another fan i had (thought it might have been a toyota) and a skyline R33 fan i got. The skyline was a push fan and the other a pull fan. Worked sweet!!!!

The fan i'm using on the left:

Image

It fitted way better before i got the radiator made bigger, the fan was actually placed over the core. Ahwell, its in, it works, and it doesn't rub, and its on a thermo switch :D :D

Image

.......and before anyone say's anything, i happen to like the shroud on the front covering the radiator and restricting airflow, also maybe restricting some mud ingress  Works fine from testing so far :D

Ummmmmm, oh, transfer case gaurd:

Image

and mocked up the important for night stage roof lights:

Image

aaaaaand a couple of poser pic's as i haven't taken any yet:

Yep, i dragged a LWB Vitara up that long hill on the start of the video Satalite posted up the page.

It was sitting on its axles, well bellied, so once i stopped it from dragging me forwards, it pulled the vitara up fairly quickly.

I have yet to self recover myself with it, and i have yet to sort the twin batterys (tricky to squeeze two NS70's into a zook), but its going to be good.

Wopass's comment was that it was noisey, but IMO, its waaaaaay quieter than a warn 8274, and sounds alot more healthy than the couple of Warn M8000's and the XD9000 i have been playing with recently
