it would be in the best interests of all 4wders if you stayed out.
You would be doing more damage than you realise. members of the 4wd movement have spent a lot of thier own time working with DOC to gain access into the "42" traverse, and at the moment it is closed to 4wds over the winter months. if you were to go in there and get caught, you could jeopardise all the hard work that others have put in to get the track re-opened.
as I said before the track is currently closed to 4wds. it will re-open on the 1st of december.
Cheers

Ditto! We do not want to give DOC any reason to exclude vehicles in any way, stay out is the best advice.
There is plenty of time after 1st December.

Theres a hut half way and great views.
please don't listen to this guy at all.
as mentioned before and obviously not noticed by this clown, there has been alot of effort by 4wders to reopen the 42 and one of the requirements is that we stick to the main track only.
please stay off any side tracks.
there are lots of kiwi in the area and by going off the main track you are brewing up a storm in a teacup.
besides that, the track is still closed to 4wds until it reopens on December the 1st
thank you

When it reopens, park up where the track forks a few km further on. You usually turn left down the hill, but a brisk walk up to the right provides some spectacular views of Ruapehu.
cheers dude. I didn't mean to sound like a wanker, but theres been a lot of effort gone on behind the scenes that not many people know about.
Thanks again

There is a bit of discussion on the bridge by the cyclists at
http://www.vorb.org.nz/ftopict-65714.html
http://www.vorb.org.nz/ftopict-65714.html
so doc claimed responability
well they have made their point......
new beams on to day ,concrete pads going on aswell , the 8 new pads will be here soon ,we will be there next weekend ready to test it
,doc are in there at the moment doing a couple of culverts that we hadnt done yet,all the clearing we did this side is nicely overgrown but is going to be good to get back in there.

Re: The 42nd Traverse
Has anyone been along the 42 Traverse lately?
I'll be down that way Monday so just wondering if it is suitable for a solo vehicle to drive at the moment?
Thanks

chances are you might get thru ok (if you were well set up with winch etc) but not recomended to go anywhere solo,if something happened you would be up S#1T creek with no way out and no cell reception for emergencys etc.
having said that i havent been over the 42 for a while and dont know the condition of the track.
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
Re: The 42nd Traverse
We went through early january, it was very dry and very dusty! It's an easy track, but I'm not sure even then i would do it solo, unless you have all the gear!!

If your taking that LR then go for it. Dig anything that you think you might have trouble to start with and that coupled with a little bit of common sense you'll be sweet! Just keep an eye out for mountain bikers.

The only reason I suggest not to go alone is that if you breakdown, its a very long way to walk for help!! You should have no problem driving through by yourself this time of year. But....one never knows!!
I can't see a mountain bike towing you out!
Have fun!!

Re: The 42nd Traverse
I might be heading down this week to drop some friends off to do the Tongariro Crossing and then pick them up again at the other end once their done. Rather than waiting around all day I thought I might see if I can get through the 42nd Traverse. Not ideal to do it by one's self I know but it might be the only chance I have to do it. If anyone else was keen to join up though that would be even better though (and safer).
Re: The 42nd Traverse
well i did it last year , was easy drivable , staying on the main track the main point, then you must run with lights on as the bikers might be a bit heavy with this good weather, take it slow around corners should to good otherwise

Re: The 42nd Traverse
Drove through solo yesterday and track is in very good condition. It took me three hours from SH47 to Owhango and that included stopping for photos, to pick some blackberries and to give some hunters a ride back to their vehicle. I was just taking it easy and going slowly round corners in case of quad & mtn bikes coming the other way as well.
The worst mud was this:

The worst water was this:

The washed-out ledges have been fixed - particularly the washouts at 26.7km (photo of mud above) and 27.7km, kudos to whoever fixed those. You've already seen photos of the deep water above. The steep hill climbs are still there though - be be careful with these as whichever way you drive it's a steep descent followed by a steep ascent so if you don't think you can get back up what you're about to drive down then you won't be able to get up the ascent at the other side either and you'll be stuck in the middle. I can't say I really noticed the drop-offs measured in hundreds of metres although I am sure there were there. I might have even been parked on one here in fact:

I would definitely recommend a vehicle with a narrower wheelbase or at least a vehicle with a tight turning circle as there are some quite narrow cuttings, some of which are straight but more of which include some very tight turns. These are mostly right at the Owhango end. Also, the wider your vehicle, the more scratches it will get from the encroaching vegetation.
All good fun though and very scenic. Great spot for a picncic by the river with the family if you chose to take them. Nice to have finally done the track and I certainly would like to go back in wetter conditions (with a couple of other well equipped vehicles) and see now much harder it would be - because it would be much harder.

Good photos! Good on yah! as they say. That 'mud hole' is much bigger in the wet season (or wetter season) the rain also make a couple of other bits more challenging! How was the dust on the road in???

Re: The 42nd Traverse
we done this track in the weekend -+-
the track was good you can see why they close the track in the winter as it gets quite slipprery
i would never take the unimog again as we had a few near death experiences there is a small bridge witch is rated at 2500kg (witch we saw after driving over it)the tyres hanging over both sides of it
bit of digging winching
definitely a good experince
you need to watch out for mountain bikers and hunters
great senery
