De-Ranged wrote::D Welcome back Steve....

Coming back with a vengence  good to see this thing on the go

Yep, back but I'll be spending nowhere near the amount of time on here that I used to... still, I am back :)

De-Ranged wrote:Come on give us a few more details.... you going to go coils and linkage or leaf again.... what sorta ride hieght

Coils... Rangie front arms for now, then 5-link later - now is about speed of completion so simple is good... Prob about 4" over standard with the Simexes thrown under (2" body lift as well, and a little fender trimming where required). Back end will be stock with 50mm lifted coils and some spacers, then eventually triangulated 4 link or something similar...

De-Ranged wrote::What about trans what you doing there to bolt it all up 8) I know you don't build a bellhousing over night!!

Divorced T/C - prob a nissan one for now then will look at the adaptor for the back of the TH700R-4 to bolt the Toy T/C to it... although Marks adaptors are not talking to me - seems they didn't like me telling them what I thought of their new national distributor in NZ... nothing against that company, but most of their products go into 4WDs, so why pick someone who will be a direct competitor to nearly everyone else in the industry who will buy those products to be your nationwide sole distributor... most companies would pick someone neutral like Repco or BNT... anyway - seems I no longer have access to their product :P And its going to cost $400US to ship that adaptor from the US... so f*&k em... I'll do something different... probably buy the toy divorced T/C kit from the US instead and run it separate.

Going to stay auto as its 4-stage, strong as buggery and simple. Although I have an R150 with T/C and could buy the Dellows kit to use that... but I want to keep this one Auto for now... will be my poor-mans equivalent of a crawler box :P

but I want to keep this one Auto for now

Funny that 8) I've pulled the five speed from the front of my trans combo and I'm putting in an auto..... gona sit on it and the bellhousing till I know if I like the auto

I'm hoping to screw with the auto's computer infeeds a bit so I can flick between full auto and manual change 8) bit like a tip-tronic.... wait an see how it goes ....

got to many other projects to sort.... for others :D at the moment...

I found lots of info on how to do that. The issue is whether the lock up will work in that gear... then you get engine braking.

What trans you thinking of using?

Ideally an A340 trans as they are as strong as... but at the moment its probably going to end up being an auto from a cessida as its free 8) and a bolt up to my 5M motor, not certain about the surf trans :? bolt up wise

Steve and I both have wiring diagrams etc to make them tiptronic. A343 is stronger though and seems to be what the comp trucks use. You have two Tcase options with that too....

hmmm what do they come out on....
The transfer case options dosn't worry me I'll be looking at dual casing it anyway for crawling with G52 transfers (need to use them for the pto access port)
you don't know what the shaft size and spline count is on the gearbox output to the transfer ?? I know its a bit obscure I'm still working out how hard its gona be to mate this into what I've got

WTF! Would you two get a room? Sheesh!

This thread is all about ME! :D

The only Autos I was discussed in this thread are TH700R-4's or maybe 4L60-E's... or possibly a TH350... nothing else... period :)

Steve

PS: Toyota only features here from the transfer case out... and thats only because an Atlas TC is too damned expensive here... hell... I'd even throw Dana60's under the truck if I could find em... I like Toyota but theres other options...

Thanks Bill ... if its possible I'll grab a copy of that wireing diagram 8)

Just had a look at the engine specs.. torquey as hell:

Holden 305 5L v8 165 4400 385Nm @ 3600

Yep, about the same power output as a 2JZ but more torque than texas... which is all I'm really interested in... the ability to turn the wheels whenever I want, not the ability to smoke all the rubber off them :)

the V8 in my RX7 is an all alloy ( very light) rover/leyland setup, its a p76 4.4 block with rover 3.5 heads feed with a holley carb, its got reasonable hp, but the torque is incredible.
I reckon you could get a similar set up for bugger all $$$

I think you should go with a LS1 Steve. My other vehical is a VX Clubsport (LS1). Yip, I'm an LS1 nut. With the right bolt-ons the injected Chevy flys!!

My 2003 LS1 had run 35,000ks and came with a modified wiring loom and computer all ready to run for $6500. It's worth every penny.

yea, I do like the LS1's, there is one for 3600 out of a c5 corvette on trademe at the moment, they arent as smooth as the commodore ones though.

The LT1's are also very nice motors too.

They are a nice motor. My brothers R8 Malloo runs the LS2 beast. Now THAT'S a motor! It runs alot smoother than the LS1 and lots more power to.

Yep, an LS1 would be great, but unfortunately my budget was stretched enough buying the Holden 304 so thats going to have to do for now...

Progress has been slow to date... work is getting in the way (As usual) but I've got the front end stripped out and ready to mount the axle... once thats done I can pull the old motor and drop the Holden in there to see how it fits...

Stay tuned

My twin brother runs the same engine in his 79 FJ40. (304) Mace Engineering rebuilt it last year. It's not run in yet. Sounds great!! Goes a treat. He was the one that drove me to upgrade the power plant in mine. I love me FJ40!
I'll be checking to see how yours goes along Steve. It's interesting.

We'll have to have an afternoon out somewhere and get some 1/4 mile times (1/4 mile MUD times, anyway 8) )

Well, I guess I'm looong overdue for an update here... I've got a little bit done... not as much as I would have hoped, but then thats par for the course with my projects anyway :)

I've made plates for the Rangie radius arms, and am using some thick washers either side of the bushes to give a little more spacing for them to twist...

Image

and here are the arms sitting roughly in position - ignore the mess on the chassis rails, I've got some cleaning up to do there... been focusing on the suspension details...

Oh, and the chassis mounts for the radius arms... I've used the original chassis mounts from a range rover chassis, and mounted them to some beefy angle ready to weld to the Bighorn... then I'll use some plate to gusset the mounts for extra strength.

The passenger side mount:

And sitting in position on the chassis:

You are one sick man steve. Cutting up a range rover chassis which could have been used to have built a hybrid is a big no no.

BTW, dont look at my chassis mounts because I didnt do it aswell

What price did you get the chassis for?

 haha... yup, I'm sick, you're sick... theres an abundance of sick people on here...

it was free!

This is a hybrid, nissan parts, Isuzu parts, Toyota parts, Rover parts... doesn't get much more 'Hybrid' than that :)

Just trying to get some pics off my phone, got the plates mounted to the axle housing... about ready to start building the axle up now...

Heres the axle with the radius arm mounts welded on, and a spring sitting roughly in place.

I'm using Prado springs rather than the range rover ones as they are about 1.5" smaller in diameter, and the Isuzu chassis rails are miles apart, meaning I have less room between them and the tyres than I would on a Hilux... so the smaller springs give me more room...

I'll use some 50x75 box to help position the spring mount, and use that as the basis for mounting the panhard rod pin as well...
