For the rear?

Would love ARBs but have a Junior due to arrive in June this year so not only would mum herself kill me but the inlaws would kill me the 2nd time and my parents would kill me the 3rd time over.

My other option of course is the cable locker I have from my other shitbox, it's a 60 series rear - will it fit?

I've read the rear diff heads are all pretty much the same.

Really? That's a bugger.

Just assumed seeing as I quite often see them listed together for sharing parts.

I told skid when he drowned his 80 that he can't drive for shit and should just give me his lockers but he said no

80 series rear is the same head as earlier cruisers, the front is an 8" head tho

i have a spare lockrite that will fit a 60's diff head that will bolt strait into your 80's housing, i only have the lockrite tho, it has seen some action

and the rear diffs are all interchangable 40,60,80 rear except for the factory lockers where you have to modify the housing to get the locker arm to clear. i had the locker in a 60 series diff head in the 80 series housing but then went ARB so its redundant now and sitting on the shelf.

Yea I just did a bit of research and found they swap in, the lockers need clearancing and need to swap over the short side long spline axle.

I have a complete cable locking 60 axle and of course the complete 80 series LSD axle so in theory should be able to swap the locker+axle from the 60 to the 80 then the LSD+axle from the 80 to the 60 axle.

Cheapest option for a dole bludger ;)

Surely someone would be keen on the lockright - MNC?

yea like i said, modify the housing and it will fit  check the ratio is right tho 4.11 was older and 4.1 newer..from memory?

the difference between 9x37 and 10x41 is bugger all off road but full time 4wd could cause premature ejac...failure of drive line and tyre wear

 Poormans Part Time 4WD - Aisin hubs

I got a bad feeling they are 3.7 ratio - done a lot of toyodiy.com research and I guess Aussie 60 series diesel lockers came with 37:9 and Japanese came with 41:10 - Japanese petrols with 37:10

Best way is to pull it out and find out, axles were originally out of a Bedford van

I would be keen to remove the old 60 rear diff axle unit less the diff head if its a full floater for a donation towards your future lockers etc or maybe to help do a deal on my bros front doff head

Well, local Toyota dealer has told me not to bother doing the bigend bearings, as there were never any problems with them

My normal mechanic can't do them for 3-4 weeks, so do I risk waiting and driving it? Do they give warning they are on the way out, or is it all of a sudden?

Toyota mechanic said to put a mechanical guage on, and check oil pressure cold, and hot, and I will get a reasonable idea, as the factory guages are known to read low.

Anyone give advice on how these hook up, and if it's a good idea?

Cheers

Decided to throw the new discs/pads in after work. Not much contact area on the old ones, and looks like a bit of oil in the handbrake hub. Have given this side a quick clean, and will open up again in a week or so to see whats going on

Decided not to risk it, and took the truck to Toyota today to get the bearings done.

Still a few things to sort, steering virations when I hit bumps, so will start with panhard bushes, and check kingpin bearings.

Brakes on the rear only just make contact with the disc, so will remove rod from bias valve and set it up so it gives max pressure to the rear to see if the valve is working (have adjusted the rod/valve position, but no difference)

Have an aftermarket oil pressure guage (electric), pyro, boost and shortly low coolant alarm to be fitted, so will look for a pillar guage.

Will throw new rims/tyres and shocks on once I decide what I want, and will be looking at a water/air intercooler.

Of course, this may turn to custard if there is too big a bill from the mechanics

I'm pretty sure the ones that failed all did it just over the 100k mark so if your truck has done 200km or 300km or more the chances are they have already been done or dont need doing?

easiest way to do oil pressure is to fit one of the oil filter spacers which have the pre-machined holes ready for temp/pressure sensor fitting.

Dont fit a pillar gauge pod. they are horrible for increasing that blind spot and many wof guys dont like them as they can get in your heads way during a crash.

Thanks for the tips, will find somewhere to fit the guages that looks ok, and will get the filter spacer ordered tomorrow.

I got one of these. Great guys to deal with and the adapter is real real nice.

I think you will find that the filter spacer will not fit unless you get a special threaded center bit made up as the VX one on the motor incorporates an extra plain bit on the end that fits into the inside of the filter.
You should take your filter off to check the detail before buying the spacer.

Oh, ok, theres a lot to learn about the dark side  , but as always, plenty of wise words from everyone. If it doesn't fit, any idea what size thread the old pressure sender would have?

Cheers

they are an old-ball 9mm tapered thread i think..... our workshop re-tapped to fit a 10mm std taper thread so my adaptor would fit i still run the factory oil sender and a VDO as well.....

Bugger, was hoping it was something standard. Will leave the guage for now I guess
