-UPDATE-

I managed to grab a few hours on the truck this week. Ive got the transmission tunnel sorted, all welded and cleaned up with just a sand needed when I strip it all down for paint. This turned into a bit of a major pain in the ass so Im glad its done.

- UPDATE -

Jeez its been a while! Ive just found a downside to posting on this forum. You see just how long it was since you last worked on your project!

Anyway now that work has settled down I can get back onto the cruiser. Im working nights at for the next couple of months so Im planning on working on the cruiser in the afternoons before I head off to work.

Got a few hours on it today

Mounted the inner guards

Image

Extended the 60 series steering shaft

Image

Installed

Image

I also started fabing up a Airbox. I had intended using a Donaldson unit that Diesel and Turbo had but once again there simply wasnt enough room so I built my own.

This box is purely to keep the K&N filter out of the mud and water. A snorkel is also in the works

Box tacked up

Image

Filter fits!

Image

Sitting roughly in place in the vehicle

Image

Tomorrow I will finish the box up, finish corners etc and make a lid. May even mount it if Im lucky

Folded up an Air tank. Going to plumb up the A/C Compressor to fill it.

Now that I knew where the winch was going to be I could cut the front crossmember to allow the winch driveshaft to get to the winch
Image

Mocked up the PTO driveshaft

Ive also bought some radiator hose so that will be the next mission. Just trying to source some clamps at the moment

Here some photos

MEAN!
Image

How its sitting now. Bonnet bolted down
Image

Airbox finished
Image
Image

New clutch master cylinder to match the slave cylinder Im using
Image

Brackets done for the water hoses
Image

Fiddle brake lever and cable shift levers for the second T/case bolted down
Image

Radiator and shroud finished
Image

Battery box and fuel pump ( will build a cover over this )

Thats all for now but Ive got all next week off to hit this thing hard. The plan is to have it so we push it into Brian Howats... and drive it out for a quick test drive before I strip it down for the last time to paint.

cheers for the compliments guys! This week is going to be mayhem.... so much to do!

Niblik. Paint scheme is probably going to be dark grey cage with red panels. My first car was a red BJ40 so I thought it would be cool to paint it the same red. The other option for the body panels is orange (think KTM colours)

As for final weight, in rockcrawling terms this truck is going to be a heavy bastard  especially seeing a mates zuk is looking like being well under the ton. Oh well the V8 will hopefully overcome any weight issues

If I had to guess I would say round the 1.5t mark

This is my first build so I can live with not having it as light as I would have liked. Im 24 so I recon Ive got a couple more builds left in me yet

In Rock crawling terms. weight means fark all. Strength is king, so you keep at it the way you are doing it.
Keep the weight down low and the wheel base long(ish).
Remember that when you fark it up on rocks it is not like a quiet flop or roll in the soft mud, the rocks will win  :P

Its funny. Watch say W.E Rock in the states and you can see the light weight buggies carve it up big time. but on the other hand watch the King of the hammers or even Tuff Truck in Oz and I am constantly blown away by where those 'heavy' trucks are going. Different styles of racing I know but they each have their pros and cons.

Ive built this one to deal with a heavy right foot and to be able to hit a range of different terrain. Gunna be fuuunn

.....the next project will be the single seater, rear engine, 4ws, light weight crawler 8)

And guys I started building this in a tiny garage on Selwyn St so its only fair that it comes bach to chch! Is there still the annual gathering of crawlers. Round Jan wasnt it?

Ok so.... the last two weeks was full on!!

Averaged 12 hours per day working on this thing.

-Motor and Gearboxes all sealed up and oiled
-Weld session on the chassis
-Exhaust done
-Radiator hoses done
-Fuel tank pressure tested and finished
-Fuel lines done
-Locker Installed
-And a stack of little things

For everything I worked on I found two things that I had forgotten about

Anyway as of this afternoon it is sitting in a shop in Naenae waiting for its brain, A megasquirt one that is!

Still pushing for it to be running by christmas
