Went to Jeep park (awesome place :D )

Bumped into another Safari stuck in mud.

Tried to pull him out.

Strap broke.

So did my rear window :( :(

We still had a good day, but probably would have been better to have gone fishing.....

Was wondering if you were on here or not. Bobrocket is the fella you tried to pull out, he wanted me to come with that morning and I could foresee the inevitable, whale well stuck in the mud  , So i stayed home and missed all the action, Glad no one was hurt. Was a good learning curve for him.

And yes I do love that part of my job - will miss that more than anything else. A blast wave is such a rush

The Maxtrax we got worked well on the stuckages.

Oh wicked, i wanna go up there one day, got any pics?

I get to go there because I work for defence. Anyone else is trespassing and liable for fines, not to mmention the potential for bad stuff to happen - Remember this is a live firing range for heavy ordnance (bombs, rockets etc) and there is shrapnel everywhere just below the surface of the sand waiting to rip you, your kids or your tyres to bits. Did I mention the soft sand with bomb craters below them - drive in and walk away...

This place is best left alone as there is still live unexploded stuff up there (a 1000lb bomb for instance they cant find).

And when they do find them and detonate them they almost burn the forest down :P

You can have plenty of fun in the dunes outside the range

Actually you no longer can. ARC (along with Defence) have imposed a full vehicle ban on Muriwai Beach north of the 26mile mark (start of Bombing range) where the Defence signs are on the beach.
Think it came in late last year

Council / Defence was up their the other weekend taking photos of trucks coming out of the bombing range.
but I didn't think ARC had any jurisdiction on the top end of the beach as it is Rodney District.?
Were plenty of guys still out on the beach right up to the tip fishing and they were being left alone :?

That's what I meant, south of the start of the bombing range.

I have never seen any signs on the beach itself recently? I remember them being there in the past but were vandalised quite often :(

Not us that was the Navy Divers. Too lazy to take it out to the proper area and the wind changed on them htrowing some burning stuff into the forest. Of course The navy paid for the damages and the fire fighting bill.

Bombing run. Bomb dropped, it buries in the sand and fails to detonate. Usually they wait if it doesnt go off for a few hours/days and then go dig it up. Bomb Alpha is one they cant find. went in but with the soft sand pockets they can travel quite a way under ground and not all travel in a straight line. Of course whern they are having a big drop and you have maybe 8 going in at the same time you get simultaneous explosions so close together it is easy to miss one not going off. And counting craters doesnt work either cause they can fill each others in. Great place but dangerous, but there are tonnes of other places to play - Woodhill 4wd park for instance  Worth the $$$

How does it not make sense? :?

Sometimes stuff doesnt work as it should. Sand with hard and
soft faces/ pockets can divert a projectile (riccochet for instance), if the stabilising fins are damaged when they hit the ground they can exert forces and steer the bomb as it passes through the sand. Lets not forget this place is full of areas compacted by large blasts and also wind blown sand.

As for the last part of my statement Kaipara bombing range is a fantastic place, the natural dunes untouched by DOC's introduced Maram grass and it's natural wetlands (yes there are some there), make this place one of stark beauty and contrasts. The damage done by years of bombing is largely invisible as the sand moves to erase most signs with only the inner area which is well used and on the hard pan showing signs of use.

Oh, and Woodhill 4wd park is a great place to play, formed tracks, varying levels of difficulty for all, local club vehicles roaming ready to assist a stuck vehicle and you get all this for a modest fee. Cheaper than the fines for trespassing I would guess too.

Sorry just reread this and it sounded "snippy" and wasnt my intention, I just like the place.

It does make sense ... based on your description of the range I can now understand how you can loose the odd one .
Although I do not live in the area I would certainly steer clear of the area.
As you say places like Woodhill, Costaplenty and Rallywoods are a far better places to play and well worth the coin
