well this is what i been up to for the last month or so, rust repairs and finishing this ute chop. All done and cab all enclosed now with my custom fibreglass liner. Am going to mount the spare to 1 side and have tool box against the other side.
Heaps a dry storage on the inside behind the seats.

You have done the right thing.

All you need to do now is put all your heavy stuff like tool box and recovery gear right at the back inside the tail gate and it will perform good.

Cheers Richard

cheers fellas. yea im thinking of having a box for tools and recovery gear made to fit up back against the tailgate and just keeping the spare wheel in the middle and just sitting on the deck rather than up to 1 side. Not sure weather i just make a plywood box or a steel 1.. the heavier the beter i guess

yep would like to think so, just a simple hoop behind the rear window going to chassis then 2 bars linking down to the rear bar uprights. Not sure im liking the shape of the cab extension.... may cut it square... dunno

That looks the shizzle. Nice and tight, follows body line well. I can't understand people who slap bars every where with no apparent thought to design or aesthetics.

Don't make a big ugly stinger bar will ya (or I 'll come up there and beat you around the head with it  ). Make a nice hoop with that sticks up above bonnet line so if you have a roll over the front edge (and hence the radiator) is protected. That is the bit that I got wrong with my bar, it is only at bonnet line.

cheers mate, yep wanted to keep everything as close as possible, hiluxes have a pretty respectable approach angle, and i didnt want to lose that..
do you mean a hoop the full width of the vehicle ie: going from headlight to headlight or a centre hoop between the headlights? cause thats what i was thinking.....

That is what mine looks like. You can see the centre hoop is a bit too low to fully protect the bonnet, but I'll live with it. You have the chance to make it a bit higher now, so my advice would be do that.

whats peoples opinions on 2 and 4 spider hilux diffs? are 4 spiders that much stronger? is it worth fitting a 4 spider over a 2?

Hi rok,
Is that because you think only having 2 spider gears is weaker than having 4 (obvious I guess :) ) or because there is only one cross pin with the 2 spider.
What is your opinion when fitting a Lockright locker considering that for a 4 spider diff the original side gears are used to engage with the lockright center, whereas with a 2 spider the side gears are replaced as well hich I think would be stronger than the 4 spider arrangement.
ie is a single cross pin stronger or weaker than using the side gears as part of the locker assembly.

Cheers
Tim

ive always heard 4 are allot stronger but have never played around with both and investigated as such, also never had a power plant big enough to do damage but ive sourced 4spider 4.5s to go in with my chev as a posed to 2 spider, interesting about the locker comment with replacement gears, had not heard this before

The 4 spider has bigger bearings in the Crown wheel and the pinion.
I am not a fan of the way the lockright works on the side gears in the 4 spider unit, but it is damn easy to fit. So in short the 4 spider is a stronger all around unit and considering the hiding most active 4wd's give their drivetrain, stronger has to be better, yes?

a short add, when i had a lsd fitted to a 9'' diff was told the four gears and pins carry the torque and shock load better

all tacked up now, ready for the old man to do all the welding, decided to keep it tight and follow lines of the grille and vehicle, not bad for my first time at doing bar work

I reckon the commonwhore V6 is the best repower for lux you can get your mits on. Mine was going to be 3.8 powered as well, but the 304 came up at a deal that was waaayyyy to good to turn down.
Keep us up to date with the conversion :P
