Workshop manuals assume you have the knowledge, tools and more importantly the finances to do everything properly.
Dont blame everyone else, you were given the information and chose to argue it

THANKS all !

The key to this is in his name and the fact he dwells on Lada's.
I have worked with a few of his country-men over the years and their belligerence amazes me (ask questions then argue your answers)
Definitely running the risk of no body helping out

Starting to know how you feel Wopass
Simon,i do appreciate yr help, but i did not get from u what i needed - the puller.
also i m new to this forum and did not know that everyone uses VIEW ACTIVE TOPIC thing and thought my topic might get lost and started new one,not because i m unhappy with yr answer
next-my nik is a combo of my second and fisrt name and does not mean anything
and i do not dwell or drool over LADAs- i admit- we can do spacecraft and weapon, but suck at making cars
also if i seemed agressive to u,sorry,in fact, i was just trying to deliver my point

Flash2004 wrote:You know? Everyone is right. i used to rebuild diffs for a living way back in another life before crush sleeves were invented. We used to spend hours on them using wet n dry to slowly peel off a few thou to get the pinion preload just exactly right, measuring it with a spring balance. Then we'd start setting up the R&P backlash with a dial gauge and a tube of marking blue for checking and adjusting pinion depth, side bearing preload and final tooth pattern. i mostly did Eaton truck diffs i must say, but quite a few valiant and other light Chrysler products as well.
The reasons were simple, minimum driveline lash for one thing, but primarily noise. there wasn't the insulation we have now and holdens were particularly bad at diff whine. Over tight truck diffs would glow in the dark as a worse case after a long trip so we had to get it right.
So how can we get away with reusing crush sleeves when all the experts say we can't? Mostly because most of you on here don't know any better which doesn't make you wrong. big mud tyres, noisy exhausts can hide diff whine and complaints, modern oils can hide a thousand sins and when you blow a diff, its because your wheels were too big and you gave it too much gas you think.
As well as that, i don't think anyone knows, or even needs to know how to set up a diff properly any more because generally if they're left alone they never fail.
lastly,my 80 series blew its rear diff seal at Christmas on the way to Pureora and oil was everywhere. That trip i used the Jeep so the cruiser just towed up and back. I clean forgot about it until WOF time and the thing had been running all that time virtually dry, but not a sound.
So I got one of the boys to change the seal. i got him to centre dot the end of the pinion and the corresponding part of the nut and count the turns as it came off. Then, after replacing the seal, i got him to wind the nut back on to exactly the same place and give it a gnat's cock more of a turn until I felt my own nuts tighten. the fill it up with oil and go get a WOF.
And it'll be fine. cheers, grandad.
appreciate yr effort ,grandad,thanks

I did my time doing stern legs on boats and we used the above methods too. I'm no stranger to backlash, preloads, tooth mesh and alikes.
Alex wanted to replace the crush sleeve because it said so and had no idea how much 1Nm of effort was (the value for preload).
He couldn't understand that to measure this or even estimate it the crown wheel needs to be removed.
He is trying to do a complete job in a half arsed way.
Cheers,
the bearing preload can be measured without taking the diff out-
follow the link http://s1123.photobucket.com/albums/l557/dr4lex/
and i did have an idea how to measure 1Nm without toy torque wrench
a fishscale attached perpendicular to 100 mm long ratchet at its end should read 1 kg,thats my 1Nm
ok
instead of fighting back I'll go actually do something
its friday night after all
