There are a couple large, free sites that I know of now. They work great, there just needs to be more of em. A good one is just north of Taupo on the river bank there. Its packed over summer and there are enough essential services there; water, toilet, rubbish bins that it doesn't end up looking like a total tip. Ranger had a bleat at me for sleeping in the back of the ute up coros but I just said im up here to get an early start fishing and he was all good. I think at this stage we'll be ok being way out in the sticks beyond jucy rental range, the big targets will be rest areas, beach carparks & other more popular spots. The fact that stuff like this is so open ended though with future options to amend the legislation and crack down a lot more is a bit worrying.

that's rank !!!!! any reason given to why champing has been banned???
my vote would be that 5 or more famailys just go camp their like normal. Tell the media of your intensions. Then let the ranger call who ever they like . The media would have a field day, considering you have been going there for 30yrs.
covertly behind closed doors we are being locked out of our own country.

Thats theft in my book by the HDC...how can the mongrels get that through without it being made public (I hadn't read anything in the public notices).
I agree with UBZ...i've never camped at the rocks but i'm sure the HDC will target other areas where I have camped.
I wonder if it's got something to do with the Waipara issue Mike?
as the river mouth is one of their 'sensitive areas' and you have to cross there to get to the rocks.

no i dont think its anything to do with the river jamie as they have an area that allows access, that is actually private land where the farmer years ago moved his fence back due to erossion problems so they really dont have any say in the matter, the farm has just been sold so intend to introduce myself and ask about his boundries etc as im sure the spot where we camp is on his land in a spot where the fence has been moved for wet lands. I HOPE. what ever way it goes the HDC has yet again/another land access prob on there hands

Going a step further the Nelson Mail said last nite the council is going to use this new law to get rid of boaties tied up in at the Nelson mariner if they they are living on board.
Apparently some guy at Motueka has been living and working on his boat at Motueka and has been given notice to move on
Cheers Richard
