Here she is:

To fit the Landcruiser front stubs first I got some round bits of 16mm plate to make the flanges. A local engineering firm had a big pile of different size cutouts from making pipe flanges so they were cheap. Then the problem is that there is a bulge on the back of the stub that usually sits inside the knuckle, so you can't just bolt the stub to a flat flange. I machined a little bit off the back of the stub but got most of the clearance by machining a dish in the flange (that's why it's so thick) - super simple if you have access to a lathe. Without a lathe it would be easy enough to cut out some spacers to pack the back of the stub off the mounting flange, but probably not quite as strong. Then I just clamped the stub on my flange, drilled the holes & got some HT bolts.

A mate did his another way - he got some solid stubs machined up to fit inside the tube of the 'Cruiser stubs, cut the flanges off the 'Cruiser stubs & welded in the solid stubs which were then (I think) welded into an RHS axle. Alternately you could get a full width bit of solid bar for the axle & do as above.
His setup would be lighter & just as strong but not as easy to swap stubs as my setup & my flanges also made it real easy to get the wheels paralell & concentric on the axle.

Cheers

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.

a mate of mine put a steel slug down inside the stud where the axle shaft used to pass through to beef it up.might be abit overkill for your trailer though.

i had a thought of using the rear axle out of a front wheel drive large van like a Fiat Ducato that way you get brakes rated axle and leaf springs all at once
my 4wd is not a truck

Not for the $50 that those cost in steel, bolts & beer :D The cruiser bearings are massive compared with those ones on TM too.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Hi team, I've gotten an rolling ute body from a vy Holden that I'm hoping to turn into a trailer.

it is a full body so need to decide where to cut it, what else to bin to make it as light as possible and easy to wof/rego.

What else should I consider?
It comes with a tray lid so fairly complete.

It'll be too low to go hardcore off-road with but I'm hoping to use this trailer for moving general stuff, but also camping. Might consider a ute rack on top to mount a roof top tent

I think the big downfall is most ute decks have a large overhang past rear wheels, which makes balancing the trailer a mission. Maybe have to move wheel arch in deck further back to get balance and looks correct?

Roger. Hmm didn't want to touch axel and wheels..might look at that and make the draw bar a little longer and strategically put a lockable box on it to balance it up.
