Spent last week away camping and touring with the family and some freinds first stage was away upinto the high country behind Seddon where we enjoyed 3 days parked up reading swimming and building darms with the kids, on the way out I managed to break a C.V.
Then down through the Molesworth and into the St James for a night, that was one long day about 8hours of driving most of that on high country tracks and gravel roads. The other hicup along the way was that it seems I dropped some rings really preasurised the sump and lost alot of oil everywhere between Seddon and the St James so we cut the rest of the trip short and I crept home in clouds of smoke and with no power best I could manage going over Island saddle was 30km/hr.

Now the Bighorn has been degreesed and is sitting in the shed while I decide what to do, I am trying to decide between fixing it or getting a Long wheel base Safari

all good have a block under house started cleaning and then hone the bores. found heavy scoring in two cylinders and pitted rust marks in another

that was plan B distroyed

plan C is .......
save up and buy a crate motor :)

383 if budget will allow

so its now a big tidy up and get ready to head out to see Metal Man might get enough to buy a meat pie and a cold drink

my experience with the nice looking, cheap usa built (not) crate motors is, dont waste your money on old shit thats thrown together in mexico with block sealer all through it so it doesnt leak instantly

get your self a brand spankin new block from one of the many after market places and build a brand spanking new motor  its worth the extra $$$ knowing exactly what you have
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

.......or even slap a cheap running motor in off tardme to keep you mobile while ya get the coin together to do it properly 8) 8) 8) 8)

Can't have ya truck parked up all summer :D :D

My weekend was busy with music stuff, but got a chance late sunday evening to pull spare motor out of one of the parts LJ50's and started prepping to fit into Wombat. Experimental parts motor that i put in is not a happy camper and need to get it out before it blows and ruins any usable parts

Hopefully do the engine swap tonight after work

Shot over to Pedros today to get the body mounts looked at and maybe install the winch thats been sitting on the shelf for the last 6 months or so.

So this is what it looked like when I drove it into Pedros shed............

NEK MINUT

Image

A more detailed look at the body mount issue can be found here http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 22&t=29003

so after the body mounts were fixed we had a brief look at the winch install.........

Image

Image

Image

sorry mroffroader but the 'jew bar' has had to be modified to suit the winch.......

Image

Image

after some measuring it was decided the mounting plate needs modifying so we will finish this off at a later date.

so I quickly shot over to 'pick a part' to look for a handle like this one on the drivers side of my 80......

Image

the passengers side doesnt have one and when Bolo removed the running boards recently, it has become hard for the missus to get into the cruiser, so I felt around the A Pillar and it seems theres 2 holes there for a handle......

Image

so I scored a couple of handles out an Estima and threw one in and kept the other for a spare.......

Image

a very productive day was had, big thanks to Pedro for your time and effort 8) 8) 8)

As i drove past i thought "i feel sorry for the joker who has to tow them out".... 45min later on our way back, i got about 1/3 of the way back and whata ya know these blokes where pulled up WITH THE LEFT REAR WHEEL OFF THE CAR. Out of curiosity i drove over and asked if they where all good. They had managed to snap the hub off the car haha asked if he wanted a tow, so we got about 600m in and the RIGHT READ WHEEL FALLS OFF ASWELL!! So we had no option but to drag its sorry ass the length on the beach. Haha

Vids to come!!
