Let the smoke clear Krawler and you will see Nissan is the way to go.

What a fantastic offer Smokey. Thank you. Unfortunately I work Sunday - Thursday, but hey if you doing something again I will get the day off no worries. Will certainly give you a ring if you don't mind, as I see you are a mechanic so always good to talk to someone who deals with them on a daily basis.

Yes patience has never been my strongest attribute when it comes to buying a new toy - I always want it NOW (well yesterday really).

Am looking at the Nissans now, which I had sort of written off previously - certainly some good prices, but again if I was getting into one of these I would want the Safari as opposed to the terrano, which makes it very comparable to the Landcruisers.

Can you CH CH boys have a look at this one

Maybe you drive past it or would like to comment on it. Seems very cheap to me which could be a worry.

Now why would you waste your hard earned $$ on that??

3.4 will be underpowered as it is, with out the eventual fitting of biggerr wheels, and its a leafy.

If you going to get big tank like that, a LWB Safari is better, it has coils all round AND a 4200cc Diesel engine.

IMHO of course

I agree with DB on that one, and that is FUGLY. You can find Safari's for that price if you look around. You would get a far superior vehicle for those $$$, even a later model cruiser.

I had a look at it..... it's definatly starting to show it's age, rust bubbles starting to show around the whole vehicle, (nothing major though, surprise), but that said, bloody tidy for an 82! only done 170ks.......

but I have to agree, I didn't realise it was an 82 till i got there, (thought it was late 80's)and you could easily do better for the money........
only a 4spd too!!!

Find your self a low roof LWB Safari.

Thanks heaps for looking. Really appreciate it. Didn't realise it wasn't a model I was searching for - I was beginning to think the older the better for strength wise. It amazed me how many Kms it had done.

Ok another idea ruled out. Ill keep browsing. Might have to start looking at these nissans a bit closer - any recommendation on years for these?

If looking at the Safari's go 88 onwards as they are coil sprung.
Pre 92's had more of a rust problem around the rear sliding windows (not sure if the lwb has them or not).

The lwb are a big vehicle but if it's room you need, go for it.
Diesels are always expensive to repair if you have to pay someone else to do it, but like DB said, the TD42 can clock up over 400k if you look after it.Also remember that the motors run 2 oil filters, and hold 10 odd litres of oil.

I'm sure there's members down there that own these, so you should be able to organise to have a drive and see what you think. You should be able to get one at a good price in the buy sell swap, or have a look at turners.

Yes the LWB has a problem with the rust. My dads one has it. He hasnt been able to find replacement windows so they've been there for years

What year did they/or have they changed their coil suspension. To avoid the rust problem I look 1992 upwards but are these later models as good suspension wise.

While we are mentioning faults, are there any common faults known with certain years of Landcruisers. Also do landcruisers have the same boot system as Hiluxs or are they different - do you have to wind down the damn window to open the boot?

Coils are on Patrols from 88 right through, with little/no change, so you are pretty much good with anything there.

Just keep an eye out for rust, and I believe the seat mounts also on pre 92 models (front seats) as these are also weak (I may be wrong).
Don't rule out pre 92 though, as they will be cheaper, and may still be in good condition.

From 93 on, the 4.2 had small changes, and the pistons were lighter, so if looking at turboing, keep in mind the earlier models may possibly handle higher boost pressures better.
Avoid the 2.8 turbo model.

Other than the above, I can't think of more problems.

The major fault with the Landcruisers of all years is THEY ARE TOYOTA

If ya looking at the Land Cruiser, i would go for a 80 series VX. Good trucks.

The majority of lWB safari's don't have sliding rear windows, so no rust problem. If you do find one with sliding rear windows and the frames are rusty, its easy as to pop the windows and repair the frames, or get rid of the frames and fit the non sliding windows sourced from a wreckers.

Damn thats a can of worms opened, however thankyou - just got to be careful.

Seen this one

Like buying a house it always worries me if something has been freshly painted but it could be genuine.

How about this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... key=464175

TB42 on LPG, power and cheap gas

by Duke3d
Yes I did see that one. Had wondered how LPG would go - have driven an LPG once and it was gutless, however I guess thats when you flick it over to petrol. I notice he says its 10 year test is due for LPG system - bets on it is in need of some TLC

could just be me but.... does anyone else think it's sitting low in the back?
Mind you, you'd probably re-shock it for offroading anyway.....

oh, and LPG, me loves it!! The 10yr cert is not too major, they just whip the tank out and test it, check all the lines etc, last I heard, around $400 to get it done, and there'd have to be something major wrong with it to fail... LPG WOF's/certs are nowhere near as bad as people think....
oh, and as for gutless, that would be a tuning thing, get them dyno tuned by an LPG pro and you'll be amazed

Funnily enough I had thought the same thing -but just thought it must have been the ground or something - silly me should have thought of possible fault. Yes probably minor prob, but nevertheless still a prob.

Ok so I will have to consider this LPG one. Do you flick yours over to petrol for off-roading? What about river crossings - LPG would even be better than diesel would it not for crossing rivers? I understand petrol is not the best.

ummmm well, I've never had a 4wd on LPG, I'm on to my 3rd LPG falcon, (this one's a factory-dedicated, no petrol!) but my previous ones, yeah, flick a switch.....done.

as for river crossings, thats more to do with getting your dizzy/electrics wet, (no such probs with diesel, no dizzy/elecs that affect the engine running!)but that said, there's plenty of guys here who run petrol or LPG who know the tricks of water-proofing them.

Yes I get the feeling you would probably want it on petrol for offroading, which does put me off somewhat as we are all too aware how much that costs now - oh despite the fact it went down a whopping 5c last night!!!

Yes, bloody petrol prices.....

"cough"lpg"cough"87cents/lt"cough"

Oh, I know that was just plain un-called for, I know, but I just cant help it!
It just amuses me no end that my wifes 2.5TD L200 is dearer to run than my 4LT falcon.........

I ain't laughin!!!!

Would anyone care to comment on prices/availability on parts for brands

ie Landcruiser vs Safari

Toyota at a guess is the more popular, hence I would imagine slightly cheaper. Is this the case. I understand it depends on model, age etc but in general?
