Thompsons Sat 26/8
Was a cool trip. Though i wont be doing the loop road again without muddies, winch and lockers.
Callum, here's the deal. you dont mention the bits about me looking like a mobile ground anchor (tied up to the back of a Safari for a fair old bit of the loop) and i wont mention the "you know what" heading up to the summit.
Tonys wagon is certainly impressive, the jet engine wind up and the lockers are the bomb, no doubt about that. tidiest and most capable safari Ive seen period. With lockers Brents one wont be far behind. (and is a bloody good tow wagon!!)
Callum, well theres something to be said about a bloke who has GPS, Air suspension, DVD in the sun visor, Compressor tanks all over the place, rattle gun, tirfor, etc etc, but neglects a few basics, like a screwdriver and wheelbrace!! (Where the hell is my screwdriver anyway dude?) But certainly a trick piece of kit there Callum, the young bloke had a ball riding shotgun for ya too dude, was still grinning whan i dropped him and his old man off.
Dixie, well dixie now has a 20litre fuel tank courtesy of a large rock rudely inserting itself between the creek bed and his tank. cheap to fill now!!!!!!
As for the Jeep, well, a bit the worse for wear, as anchors are prone to being. Little spring problem, missing half of my trasfer case brace, antenna is now "racing styles" ..... / ...... Rear bumper corner sections are about to become "ex rear bumper corner sections", there's half a tree wedged between a tyre and a rim..... all in all though I'm happy - killed the Thommo's summit (without too much drama, aside from some choice expletives about a third of the way up the first part) and did the loop road (with a hell of a lot of help!!)
I'm a happy boy.

HA HA HA FORGET THE DEALS,i'l tell every bastard about how Callums Toyota had to be towed down the summit by a bighorn He he!!(ive got a few pics, also got pics of him standing on 2 wheels going up YEEEHAAA.
Cool unit mate, hope you have a winch on that xmas list!!
Got a few scars myself, and yes one was my fuel tank(dam),dent in the ass end,but not to bad for the hell trip.At least I know the winch works.
Hope all had a good day, awesome crew on a hard out track, with a great end result.
oh yeah SAFARIS RULE,and you know it.

i did make it up the middle though.... I have a winch in transit between dunedin and akl.. didnt make it in time for the weekend.. 12000lb should do it.. i dont mind being towed out, just hate being first..
Your swrewdriver will be in the mail on monday.. made a good jack handle too..
I usually dont need a wheel brace, just think i need one incase i blow another compressor
And im gonna order bead locks. twice ive tore a valve off that tyre tube.. or should i just leave more than 10psi in the tyres...
good pics

Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
Hey Dave, great day mate certainly good look with a trio of nissans tramping through the bush.My truck (middle one)is near stock,td42,40 ml sus lift, ome shocks/springs,32"gyear wranglers, pto winch and dirty truck stopping factory tow bar(which is coming off). With the amount of earth i moved heading into the loop first i shouldve welded a cutting edge on my bullbar(as you can by the mudded photo). The other two nissans are certainly well set up,definately no sub for lockdiffs, horse power and height.Sitting behind them, you think your in an airport, awesome sounds(Turbos, arghhhhhhhhhhh).
I see a few other members poppin up with safaris,be awesome to line em all up for a play in the mud.
And yeah Callum,ya didmake it up before getting pulled back down(he he).

So how have you guys set your Safari's up? Still deciding between 35's and body lift, or sticking to 33's a little longer and going front lokka, since it doesn't run the hair dryer to turn the 35's
Lookin at he pic's Dave, they are all still running 33's. If they are workin for you, throw a locker in!!!!!

What lift has the back truck got, looks like at least 5"
Can't wait till my next Nth Island trip. Will have to go there!
May have to wait a while as I'm already 45hrs in debt for holidays

Hey all, just a quick note to thank all the crew from this trip. Myself and junior were invited to ride shotgun with Callum and Mark for the day. Special thanks to Callum who had the young fella with him all day. The young fella is hooked, has been hassling all day for us to go and buy a toy so we can have a go. Might have a chat to the book keeper next week. Anyway thanks to all the guys there we had a great day. Cheers from Rod and Jordan
DaveM, not 100% sure. If memory serves it has a total of 7inches, but dont know what contribution is body lift and what is suspension lift. dixie will have the gen i'm sure.
rod, pleasure to have you and the young fella along, you're both welcome anytime. (need a good tow strop/winch man, and you certainly got some practice.)
Go on mate, get a toy....................
Zuky, yeah the loop road runs down to the right on the way up the teAroha side.
Some fun bogs, a largish (40mtr diameter??) mud lake, some lovely tight right and left hand downhill corners which had me balancing on two wheels on a couple of occasions, (a couple of which noone was 100% comfortable getting around) A gritty little river crossing with a 5-6ft sheer drop in with rocks that enjoy crunching fuel tanks, finishing off with some greasy hill climbs to get back out. (lockers cam into their own then, and those without lockers got winched/towed) I think it took about 3.5 hours.

Cheers for the pics. Circling the wagons.....
No inspiration needed, it's not a pissing competition.
Ill just stick to what i have planned for the bus, not worth spending too much dosh on it. Snorkle, Bar/Winch and some 31's will do. I just have to get it through me noggin that although i may be willing, the capabilities of the truck are limited. It manages to raise some eyebrows (Thommos summit on road tyres for instance) but eventually if i carry on pushing it too hard its gunna break.
I'll get it to a certain level, but i'm not going crazy. That loop road was about as extreme as it will get fro the Ch'okee, and even then i was pretending to be a boat anchor for a fair old part of it.
On another note, the spring maker and suppliers are supplying me with new front coils!!!!!!!!!!!! 1mm thicker D and an extra coil apparently. Bloody passengers one turned to poo on its first outing!

Good shit!!!!!

The one in the first two pic's i got to inspect first hand. That was running 31's. etc etc...
I'm 99% sure that the other two were running 31's as well.
There was a couple of Safaris and a cruiser parked next to that one in the top two pic's. Standing back looking at front diff clearences, I guess the smaller diff in the cheroke on the 31's gave it what looked like equivilant clearence to a cruiser running 31's and the Safari running 33's.
I guess what I'm tryin to say is get the work done on it ASAP before ya kill it tryin to go places on road tyres!!!!!!!
