Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
SU Carbs are one of the most simple carbs out there once you've got your head around them

Good point. Then how about a Weber?
This From RPI Engineering:
'Unlike the Weber the Holley float bowls are mounted both in front and behind the carburettor, causing fuel starvation and fuel flooding problems when off roading on steeper inclines. The Weber's float bowls are either side of the carburettor, completely alleviating the problem.
We have already done a great deal of competition & off-Roading (trailing) with the Weber and have found no fuel starvation or flooding problems when operating on steep inclines or with fast cornering.'

Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
Lincolns had problems with angles and downdraught webers on his lada. Su carbs are the answer for carbuation on this imo. If not then injection.
Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
I must say for a landie, It's rather cool. Love the idea of the setup for touring around and being able to sleep inside when it's pouring down, something where my ute just doesn't quite cut it.
Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
Hmmmm sounds like 3.9 EFI is the way carbs could be easier just want to get it going

Yep, pretty much. Series Landy's are a cult thing. Everyone seems to have a soft spot (usually in the head) for them somewhere.
At least when you get to defenders the ride is pretty good, on a personal level, the comfort level in them is still crap. (shithouse seating, cramped passenger compartment etc) But you can't deny the following they have.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

injected or converting to carbs?
Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
Got a mint running 3.9 from Rex at land rover spears we went and pulled it out of a disco came out easy apart from 1 bell housing bolt that took over an hour to get out got carbs on, new valley gasket on. photos to follow successful days effort
Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
I had some time to kill on Saturday, so took it upon myself to re-colour the roof. It was either black or white. I had black in the shed

See how hot it gets in the summer, can always spray it white again

Mission on today, up at Land Rover Spares at 8am to lay claim to this:

Its a running 3.9, one of the early ones with the V belts.
We pinched the truck from work and turned it into our mobile work shop

A few hours and some very tricky to get at bell housing bolts later, it was out:

Once home, we stripped the top end down ready to receive the carbs. In reasonable shape in there, a bit of carbon deposit coating things, cam wear looks minimal which is what can let these motors down if the servicing is not done apparently.

So we bunged the carbs on, and while i was scrounging through the pallet of stuff that is the remains of the lunched original 3.5, I found the rocker covers. They look way cooler than the 3.9 covers, so on they went.
3.9 in disguise

We were all keen to bung it in the hole, but a leaking plug and this adapter thing on the end of the crank stopped us fitting up the fly wheel. Grrrrr.

Getting closer, maybe next weekend we might get another day on it

Another good day at Dieselboys place got engine in mainfolds on clutch and all on and clutch even works bonus just got to wire and fuel up now so close another day and she'll be running. Pictures to follow
Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
Yup missions owwwn
I thought a quick pick of Daves accumulated pile of engine junk would be a good way to kick things off

Its a pallet load!!
First mission was to remove the flex-plate adapter from the crank shaft so we could fit the flywheel. This is the little plate here, just undo the 6 cap screws and it pops off.

Oh no it doesn't.

Yup, after stripping the hex out of the them all with the rattle gun, attempting to drill the heads off, i ended up spending an hour with the grinder tickling em out. I didn't touch the crank with the grinder either. Fawking amazing
Dave swapped on the fly wheel and clutch, we cleaned up the input shaft, hunted round for ages and finally found the release bearing retainer hiding in the bottom of the bell housing, and then hoisted it in.
No time for a coffee break Dave!!!

Yup, its gonna hit the roof.

Few hands and some maneuvering

Bit of a wiggle

More wiggling, and its in!!!!

The hole is finally filled!!!

So now we gotta plum it all in.

Anyone running the strombergs got a photo of their engine bay?? I have done a google image search with out much luck. In fact haven't even managed to find a work shop manual online for the Land Rover 110. That would be even better

Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
what do you need to know? Are you planning on rejetting the Cd175 strommys for the 3.9? often they are lean enough for the 3.5

Just a pic looking down on the engine would do it, we have a box of hoses, and we don't know what we do and don't have. Some of its obvious like fuel lines and the vent hoses, but how the crank breathers are routed, and other misc vacum hoses, diff lock vacum hose etc are not. Just need a pic for referencing and it would all fall into place quickly.

Fill us in on the jetting, we are all ears. The carbs are going to get an overhaul at some point soon so new jets could swapped in during the overhaul.

Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
Hope they are some help, just ask if you can't make out much, just took them as I was passing by the shed, is my 3.5 that I pulled out of my 110. well over 200K genuine and still ran bloody well,(ok timing chain and cam getting a bit buggered) The previous owner ALWAYS changed the oil at 5000k intervals and I reckon if you look after a rover it will look after you, especially the 3.5. As for the CD175's 3.5 on a 3.9 if yours are later model ones like mine they aren't adjustable(early ones used a special tool though the dashpot to raise/lower needle to change mixture throughout rpm range) sooo either it will have to be modified to take SU needles or find a great carb specialist who can modify the needle. They are a bloody simple carb and great once they are set up, flow sucks, but still be ok for a 3.9. I would just hate you to melt a valve stem or piston by leaning it out. I guess you could try it first and pull plugs to observe colour
Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
Diff lock vaccum hose was behind the carbs(rear end) down on the manifold
Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
Cheers for the info will help out heaps
Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
Well got her turning over now just got to sort out fuel leak from under vehicle and wiring issues then once HEI dizzy turns up its drive time

Re: 4x4Amb's Land Rover 110
what brand of HEI did you go for? might have to check total advance, rover's and p76's seem to be fussyish in this area, I put a p76 dissy in my 3.5 once and it didn't go nearly as well due to not having enough advance
