Start it up and hold a piece rag out from the grill a couple of inches,it should suck the rag toward the grill, you dont want it blowing away.

that's a neat trick yea that's sucking, would have been cheering if that was all it was, would have felt like a fool but still cheering.

ok so bit of a fiddle this morning at the workshop doesnt overheat while on idle but as soon as i start driving the temp starts climbing ideas?

My jeep was doing that. Creeping up when you started driving. I had tried everything to fix it new fan, sender, flush. Turned out to be the head was badly corroded and the coolent was turning into liquid rust. I lost the ability to cool itself. I solved the problem by selling it.
Is it an auto? Is the trans cooler in the radiator?

i dont want to sell it just bought the bastard lol yea its auto bit has external cooler infront of condencer.

To test the viscous fan coupling.
With it stationary and cold tape one blade to the shroud. Use good quality 2 inch wide duct tape. Tape it good and strong.

Then start it up and just let it idle. Don't rev it as this might give enough drag to rip the tape off and you want the increased drag from the hub fluid to do the job!

The tape will hold it while cold but as it warms up the pull from the fan will (should) overcome the tape.

If it doesn't then the fan hub is faulty.

Hope that helps. :)

Fan is back wards
Never seen viscus fins sticking out the back :? Supposed to "sense" radiator temperature not block :D

Cheers,

Cheers,

the fins on the viscous hub or the fins of the fan? it did suck a rag towards the grill

It's not hard to test a viscous fan properly.

Step one

Take the truck for a spin to warm it up.

Step two

Leave the engine runnng and drape a tarp around the entire front of the truck and tuck it in tight, the idea is to block all airflow through the radiator.

Step three

Run the engine at about 1500rpm, probably chock the accelerator pedal as the hand throttle won't go that high.

Step four

Walk away for 5 mins and do something else while it revs away.

Step four

Come back and nervously watch the temp gauge. Hopefully it gets just over the half mark and the fan kicks into life, you will hear it, it will suck the tarp into the grill. Leave it working, leave the revs up, and if your cooling system is good even with the tarp fitted it will cool the engine down enough for the fan to cut back out.
Keep a close eye on the temp gauge the whole time.

I have used this method heaps of times, it's the only way to check in real life conditions that its working.

pretty sure the viscous hub is shagged dont hear it kick in bummer its had 2 fitted on it in the last few years weird how 2 new assemblys can be rooted

Did ya do the test???

If it over heats during the test, and the fan doesn't come on, then you know for sure the fan is rooted :D

At least you will know 100% for sure by doing the test 8)

didnt use a tarp but had it running all my lunch break 40mins with the fan blade taped to the shroud temp rose 93degrees and it didnt kick in

I wouldn't expect the fan to come in at that temp, your thermostat is only come fully open at 88ish degrees. The fan will come in much closer to 100 degrees if not over, depending on where that temp reading is coming from i.e the water temp straight from the head in the top hose can easily reach over 100 degrees when shes workin

the temp is what im not sure about what is normal operating temp for a td27 and what temp should the fan kick in? my aftermarket temp gauge hits 104 then the stock gauge hits 3/4

Where is your after market gauge taking its reading from??

But yeah, you should be having some serious fan action well before 3/4 on the factory gauge, no matter what

Turning the fan around won't change the direction of flow it will just be a bit more efficient and suck a bit more air, not sure that it will have much effect at normal road speeds, but you never know until you try, process of elimination.

That test would only work if you were reversing the rotation of the fan, Putting it on backwards will not effect the way the air moves just the efficency. Fix the fan as simion said( reminds me of my childhood) and put water wetter in it and your troubles will be gone.
Terranos will always run hot there isnt the room under the bonnet

rad out again must have gone through 10l of coolant during this process, yep better try everything, im hoping the extra air flow will solve it with the fan how it was im guessing the air was already hot from the transcooler and condencer.
