kiddin fella..

uncanny what pops up when ya get chattin.. must have been a few of them around originally then...?

so ya gonna get her back to a stock original condition or add a few 'mods' on?

Stock drive train/engine/suspension to get some thing rolling.

Then probably do a disc brake coversion on the front, extended shackles on the springs, longer shocks/reposition mounts, weld rear diff (see how long that lasts before i break axles).

Hopefully, if i can get enough bits together, i would like build another engine with the aim to get a bit more performance out of it. Theres heaps of scope for that with a low tech 2stroke like this. Do a bit of port work, make a two stage expansion chamber, lightened fly wheel, different carb (thinking a square slide Mikuni) and do something with the crank, get it ballenced or somthing so it will rev to 15000 with out self distructing

It'l be a kool toy, not much of a weapon, just a toy 8)

Hahaha, just more scheming and dreaming 8)

I put together an engine out of the two. I cleaned up the carb and intake manifold and reed valves, bolted the starter motor on, tied it down onto a pallet, filled the float bowl with fuel, hooked up a few wires here and there, and patched in a battery.

I nearly got it to start up properly, it couched a couple of times, but then the starter motor decided to play games.

At least i know its going to run when i drop it in ;)

 I have so many bits its a case of where do i start now

I'm looking to figure out the easiest option, least amount of work etc (thats doing a good job aswell off course)

On a really close inspection of the New Blue LJ, it has the two remaining panels in need, and the windscreen.

So i'll cut the panels off, and and rob what ever else i need off the body. The big question is do i take the rest of the body to the scrap yard?? There is a risk that i may regret it as i find i needmore bits. I also don't wnat hundreds of wrecked LJ's at my house on my really small front yard

Then there is the chassis. The new blue one as an great chassis on it. Its imaculate. It has the gearbox cross member in it still, but the springs and diffs seem pretty tired

The green one on the other hand has a good straight chassis, the spings are really good, and if the odometer is correct, has done very little work. Diffs have very little lash, and its has never had anything other than the two stroke motor in i, so the drive line is still nice and tight. (the blue one has a cert plate in the engine bay saying it was once certified to run a 1300cc Datsun engine)

So today, my thoughts are that i will pull the body off the green one, finish fixing the floor and front body mounts and replace the last two panels. While the body is off, clean up the chassis, and weld the gearbox cross member back in.

In the mean time raid the blue one for parts, put the running gear in the shed for spares, sell the engine(runs well) and box and hard top, pull anything off the body that could be usefull, and then take the rest to the dump. Should i keep the chassis?? Will be really hard to throw that away as its so good, but what use is it ever going to be??

Your thoughts please!!!!!

Will post pic's after work tonight.

keep it db..

can never have too many spares.. at least til the end of the build, then when ya find ya wont be needing it,sell it on to someone then.. even just to make a little $$.. ;)

I'm with Nib.... you bin it now you'll want it later  my latest case of this on the lemon an auto trans oh and guess what I've thrown out two of them so far, couse I thought I'd never use that 8-O

I'd say have the clean up a while after you've finished, should know after you've started braking things what you need to keep

Looks like a nice little toy 8) the sort thats alot of fun

Re the storage space problem, you could drill out the spot welds so all the panels seperate and store them under the house, in the rafters, whatever.

Not practical on a modern machine but may be worth a go on an older vehicle like the 50

Yeah, i agree with you all. No point throwin away something that may be usefull. Most of the panels are pretty rotten, so i'll throw the useless bits of the body, keep anything that may be of use and keep the chassis as a spare for now.

So i made the call this afternoon and kicked it all up a gear. The bodys off and ready to start surgery on the floor pans and front body mounts.

Chassis ready for a cleaning up and painting.

The more i look at the cage i have the less i like it. I think i might have to save up and buy somedecent steel and twist someones arm into helping me build a decent one based on the dimensions of this one.

Some photo's of the progress:

The new wreck in all its glory:

I was going to use the chassis on the new blue one as it had the gear box cross member in place but on closer inspection YUK. Even i could do a better job of welding it in   (and thats saying alot  )

Image

Image

Pretty shagged looking front leaves in it:
Image

Its got air shocks in the front, wonder if they still work
Image

And this ones for Rex. (remember the bolts in the engine mounts?? Not to worry the engine was resting on the diff head)
Image

Sooooooo. Enough about that one. Thats just a parts truck.

This is the cross member i need to put back in. Hoping to insert an internal sleeve and then glue it together with the mig or arc:

And this evenings achievement: (the missus helped me lift the body of 8) )

Ahhh, yeah, and the mess i gotta patch up. Any advice??

mine looks a lot worse on the outside than even your parts truck, but underneath it looks pretty good (rust etc) , started building the rollcage last night getting bar lengths etc sorted and will probally chop out the old cage tonight

my uncle had one of these for the farm (till it tipped over once to many times and you couldn't close the doors  )

Had the same problem with rust his answer  you know the old door mat's made from strips of rubber wired together.... yep

When he finially buried it there was more daylight than floor and those mat's were still good

Rather you than me DB

What ever you do on the sills, make sure you weld in some box section for rock sliders. Saves having an external bar. Apart from that, enjoy. If anything, you should be bloody good at welding by the end of it

How much do you guys know about the LJ50 motor and fault finding?

I have an SJ30. Its the late model version basicly a 413 with 410 bonnet and grill and running a lj50 motor with AC (factory).
It has a hicup or miss only under high revs and load win I hit a bump.
This is usualy happins just before the top of a hill.
I have replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs and ht leads, cleaned out the carb and it still does it
any idears?

If it were me (never had one of these motors before, but lots of two stroke bikes) i would check replaced these things in this order following on from what you have already done:

Point gap(to wide) and points
Coil (could be breaking down under the hard use)
Fuel pump (diaphram and vacum lines)
Float level and operation of float valve
Crank seals

My feeling is that its most likely electrical. But could be starving du to the prolonged high rev's, or flooding due to it hitting a bump.

I have a manual now if you want any specifics.

Thanks for that :D
Might try the coil. I was hoping to stay away from the area as its electronic
ignition, and hard to find bits for
The float level seems fine and the fuel pump is electric and working fine.
I have also checked the nedle and seat valve and that also seems fine
If i manage to fix it ill let you know what it was
thank again

hills and cars is usually a fuel problem, but the missing under high revs and load is a ht lead problem, can you describe the miss a little better does it affect just one cylinder? , whats the flow from the fuel pump like? check the rotor for cracks as well

:D :D made some wicked progress today :D :D

Welded in the gear box cross member, rust treated the chassis, gave it a healthy dose of rust proofing paint and then a liberal dose of underbody sealer.

Cross member stubs;

Tacked in place with the collars:

The chassis all finished and sealed:

Decided i was having to much fun with the welder so finished welding the replacement panels on:
