You can buy a complete 1UZ for $1200, add a flywheel, adaptor plate and heavy duty clutch and you have a total of about 3k ready to go. You would be hard pressed to get a 1/2JZ with new clutch for that money.

Why would you want to run a turbo motor off road? The V8 motor is shorter than the 6 cyl as well.

is there any reason why you want to stick to a toyota engine.

a really cheap alternative with lots of torque and bloody cheap to run would be the plain old 3.8 holden V6.
if you want more power then you supercharge it.

cheers

I would be suprised if you could get a Holden V6 in good condition for much less than a 1UZ.

The bellhousing adaptor and clutch etc will still cost the same as the 1UZ assuming you keep the factory gearbox.

The V6 motor puts out less HP and LB's and weighs a lot more than the 1UZ as well.

Plus it doesn't sound as good :-)

Yeah I'd be the first to admit that nothing sounds as good as 8 cylinders of raw power throbbing under your foot, but if the guy wants torque and a motor that will run on the smell of an oily rag then you can't look past the V6. from most of the lexus owners that I've spoken to, you need to be higher in the rev range to get anywhere.
anyway we can give the guy our opinions and he can decide what way he wants to go, so long as he keeps on 4 wheeling thats all that matters, aye.

For sure, at least we all agree that you need more power than stock!

All the offroading I have done with my 1UZ has been a lot more enjoyable than with the original diesel motor, makes it a lot easier to drive.

i had a holden v6 in my hilux before i wnet to the lexus, for an easy motor where everything is in the right place the holden wins, if i could do it again i would go supercharged v6, i tried to find one before i got the 1uz but could not

found this on a site >>>>> Marko Djuric's '93 Toyota Supra, a street driven vehicle with a stock displacement 2JZ-GTE that dynoed 1520 horsepower at the rear wheels in 2004, still running on gasoline.

seen 1JZ-GTE´s on trademe for less than $1000 , seen a few 2JZ´s go for between $1500-$2500 with stock ECU & wiring loom ,etc - i will have to pay a bit more as will after the VVTi version . would you rather have an engine that sounds great , but is rather average in torque & power or one that has shitloads of grunt & is totally adjustable in power output - but sounds average ?

The power and torque of the 1UZ is not bad at all, the torque curve will be worse on a vvti turbo car that is revving higher

No doubt the 2JZ is a wicked engine in street cars and drift/drag vehicles and would definitely put out more torque than the diesel that was there previously so would make a good replacement option.

Don't discount the 1UZ though, it's a good swap into the Prado's/LJ71's.

The 1UZ is a revvy motor with good horse power, however compared to a lot of stock motors the torque down low is better (or at least not much worse). Some of the 1UZs on tradme aren't that flash, so be a bit careful. A good 1UZ will still fetch 1.6k or more, specially now that Japanese alloy is worth so much melted down.

Pop in to 4wd accessories and take a look at the prado with the lexus V8 in and have a chat with Rick at the same time, trucks just about has cert bar a few niggles. Same bay as yours ;-) would give you some ideas....

Oh and he's decided he'll never doa conversion like mine again with factory comp... Link with loom is soooo much easier!

as far as i know VVTi is purposelly for lower to mid range rev's as most multivalve headed engines are weaker in the lower rev spectrum compared to the older 2V heads , where mulitvalve design excels at higher revs & even more so with turbo engines , sort of a "catch 22" , seen any VVTi 1UZFE around ? I wonder what the weight difference is between a 1UZFE & ethier a 1JZ or 2JZ ?

go the lexus

I am going through the same process at the moment and it seems the lexuses on trade me vary in price quite cosideribly. have spoken to a few local wreackers who have offered to get 1 direct from japan all I have to pay is freight and should be able to get one in my garage for less than $800. Have been warned to do timing belt and waterpump before anything else though

1UZFE is lighter than 2JZ-GE

wonder what 1UZFE's are available ? have heard of a 4.3 with VVTi , anyone got any of these ? 800 bucks is way cheap , drop on a screw blower with aftermarket ECU & it sounds like fun !

The later model 1UZ's and the 3UZ's have VVTI.

The advantage of VVTI is that you can run a cam profile for low down torque and a profile for high end power. Two cams in one essentially.

To control VVTI you need a more advanced ECU and more wiring which can get complex, or alternatively keep the factory ECU which is complex to wire up.

I haven't seen a VVTI 1UZ for sale yet in NZ.

If you do get a 1UZ you should do the starter, water pump and cambelt as a minimum as these are impossible to do once they are in the truck. It's probably also worth chucking a seal kit through the power steering pump and doing bearings and brushes in the alternator.

If the power steer pump leaks it runs down onto the alternator and will kill it quickly. I also did drive belt and tensioner/idler to make sure everything was nice and quiet. The bearings were cheap as.

The other likely things are leads, plugs, rotors. These can be easily done in the truck though so leave them until they need doing.

just out of interest, how much of a budget have you got.
there is a guy in taupo doing lexus conversions for a living.

Yep, the other thing to remember for this application is that the LJ71 with it's 4.88 diffs is pretty low geared, so a more revvy motor actually suits the std drivetrain better than a torquey-but-lazy mill.

As skid says, there's a bloke in Taupo who can hook you up with flywheels, adapter plates, modified bellhousings etc right through to a full conversion, all good work at a good price.

Cheers

no offence intended by this... but you are worse tha my girlfreind in a shoe shop.. you never chose which ones to get....and you let people tell you wat you 'need'/ dont need and end up doing nothing. lol

why dont you sell the project as it is (or as parts), and buy a cruiser that has already got most mod you want until you go back to ausi-land and flick it on before you go.
