I'm with you but!
If someone DOES complain? I have to move on. Like the officer said, I can't annoy others. And if someone is close to me firing my airgun that isn't safe.

Mate, it will happen here no matter what. Just keep doin what your doin, and be mindfull of how you come accross. Hell, look and some of the shit i have stirred up over the years (on purpose usually lol) by stating my opinion instead of just biting my tongue. Everyone has there own opinion, and no opinion is necessearily right.

If you think your the shit, then good on you!!!!! If someones opinion is that you aren't all that, then who cares eh??

You gonna give up 4wheelin co's rokhound and H20 reckon they are better than you ( ) ????

So what if they are??

Go get muddy/wet/dented (depending what your into :P ) and have fun, at the end of the day thats what we all do on ORE.

Just takeon board their advice about access issues and Ecan stuff, its VERY important at the moment!!!!!!!!!

cheers DieselBoy,
i needed to here that i think. i wont be stopping 4wding cause of those two, all i ment was i would lie low on the forums. i will never stop offroading. its my passion. as for rokhound and h20lover, thay are in a different leage and i would never take that away from them. hay they are out there doing there thing and thats cool. as for e-can issues, i am in the prosess now of finding out the deal with travelling the south side on saturday the last thing i want is shit to hit the fan over this trip. i just want to do the south side track the route i always do, and take a few buddies along for the experiance. if the are issues with access, i wont lead everyone up there and mite hit another river instead. i am a very resposiable 4x4 driver and dont do dodgy stuff to wreck it for every one else. i just go out and do my thing. i understand the access is a hot topic at the moment and would never jepodise that. i mite be a newbi but i have taken to 4wding like a duck to water and will go offroading till i die. (hopefully i dont die cause of it

I'm probably a bit late for the firearm bit but my one eyed :cyclops: biassed view is that firearms are for smoking donks over and nothing else. I don't think they make a very good 4x4 accessory or a very safe one.

go 4x4ing or go hunting

I have the same feeling to this as well - while I do not doubt that you guys would undertake it in a safe manner, i just feel that the two pass times are best kept separate, especially so in a public area such as the Waimakariri River. Just my opinion anyway.

Cheers

If I'm in a boggy paddock shootin bunnies, I choose me FJ40 or my quad bike to get round on. I guess I'm lazy. I dunno. What would the farmers use to get round the block when they what to kull off a few bunnies? I've worked on about three sheep stations in North Canterbury as a farm hand. back then it was common to have a gun rack in the back window of the landrover. It isn't common for a towny going 4X4ing to go shooting at the same time.
But that's just what i know, and that ain't alot.

Honestly, drop the fires arms thing, its been covered. They are not alowed to be USED up the waimak, or any other public place.

Air rifles are in a different catagory.

petefj40 covered that with his research.

If they wanna take a air powered pea shooter for makin sport of mamailian pests, then good on em, if you don't like the idea, don't attend the trip.

The difference is that the farmer is rabbit shooting, while utilising his truck or ATV on his on property. Not shooting while 4wding. Whereas it could be perceived that your shooting and 4wding at the same time. AS I said before; you guys would no doubt be safe and not cause any grief to anyone, but I just think that the two recreational activities are best kept separate for their own benefit

fair comment. just i use my 4x4 to get to most of my hunting spots. but i wouldn't get there otherwise but i understand what you mean. as we dont shoot from the window. we just use as transport to get to a location. then from there its trucks off and on foot we go. nothing worse than trying to shoot a fleeing rabbit while trying to negotiate rocks and obsticals while driving/spotlighting.
i needed a rant aswell. now im done... :? :?

Just to let you know that i'm not trying to flame anyone or say that me or my truck is better than anyone elses. As mentioned i'm just trying to keep it real. Your asking people to join you on a trip and start out by saying you can do it no worries. No problem, but later you mention having to give it death and/or use a winch. Now if i was going to join you on a river/mud run thats one thing but its a different trip when you need to winch through bogs  Someone, maybe not you, could end up in a situation they don't want to be in. I'm all for you guys doing this cause thats where i went when i had my first truck. as you mention it does have a bit of everything especially that truck ####### silt. But bearings are cheap considering how much fun it is. When you or anyone else is organising a trip thats pretty much open to all you need to be honest when describing it.

well thats the thing, i havent fully planed it yet. a i said earlier in the forum, i was open to suggestions on this trip. there are bypasses along the way and am going to check it out on wenesday so i wont lead anyone into fored hazzard they cant do. as for access i am in the prosess of finding out from e-can. cheers for the concern thou. i can see how it could get out of hand and dont need the hassels as i like everyone to be happy. but at the end of the day i did stat muds and snorkal. so it aint a walk in the park and you would want to have some experiance of mud and 2 foot deep river crossings. cheers.. :D

Now that would have been a better intro  Nothing personal here just trying to keep things real. Nothing will scare someone away from 4wding faster than getting into a situation that freaks them out or wrecks their truck.

i know what you mean there, i guess for me i just chose to stick with it.
my frist few experiences at the mak saw me floating down the main flow and driving out the other side (very wet and  ) and the other being stuck in a big mud hole 10pm on a tuesday and only had a rope. i learnt from them and got a winch, ground anchor, ect ect. i have learnt alot form my mistakes and am still learning as i dont think you can ever stop learning in this game. i just hope the track is passable on the south side for a variaty of hight clearances. once i have done it in the week i will let everyone know the full deal. i have been talking to another member offline and he reckons we could possibly do the selwin and i know someone else is keen. we all just want to have a good time. and knowone wants to break stuff. i guess from my drifting days i am just used to it. it happens when you are willing to push the limits. not that im saying this trip will be, but atleast if somone wants to they can and we will lend a hand if things get tough for them. cheers mate.

p.s. still keen to come along and learn a thing or two from the hardcore guys :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Have you considered the Ashley track into the Okuku confluence and upstream from there. You will get plenty of mud, river crossing, tight trees to manouvere through, rocks to go rock hopping over all in a dedicated area. not much further north then the waimak. Selwyn is dry and boring. We lead fundraising trips down there for those with NO 4wd experience what so ever.

the ashley track sounds good. as for a trip you mite have to do something there. if ok with you. :D i would be very interrested in a trip up there and if the skill level is good for begginers, two of my mates would like two go aswell. i guess i just love 4wding and will take any opputunity to go out finding new tracks and obsticals. i guess the saying "i your not getting stuck your not trying hard enough" applys to me in a big way. i have only been 4wding for 12 months now and will go atleast once a week. most of my experience was self tought through trial and error. i dont like fund raisers as every one iv'e been on was no skill req. i like to do my own thing as its my escape, but in saying that group trips are fun aswell. i just get a buzz from taking people somewhere they have never been before.
and if saturdays trip was anything to go by. i hope to do many more. cheers guys.

Ashley sounds great, always keen for a trip somewhere new, specially if we have our own expert guide. Let us no what and where you decide i'll be there so long as my snorkel is made and fitted by then..

Was that the section just down stream of the pine plantation near the Ashley village? I've been down that way a bit lately and got most of the tracks in my head now. Including the ones that terminate with sudden drops :) Is good fun, not so rutted as the main track and some good optional holes.

Ashley track was good last time I was there, might be pretty boggy for standard trucks and may do some damage if not particularly careful Snorkel not a must for the Ashley track itself but if you want to get right out to the Okuku it would be recommended as the river has come right to the bank and we had to bush bash through some broom to avoid a bad river crossing (read wet interior type failed river crossing).

well this forum is generating a bit of interest in the ashley. once i have done the south side track tommorow with azza and my mate, i will post details and pics of the harder stuff. still haven't heard back from e-can, two days running now. so as i said before, i wont lead a trip up there on the good tracks unless i can conferm from e-can if we can. i will make a call on it tommorow. i am keen to do the ashley so, as soon as i know i will post all details. cheers guy for the feedback and keep it coming.

p.s. if anyone is keen for tommorows trip we will be at the south river bank, west of motorway bridge, directly across from jetboat ramp at 11am. could be a bit of trial and error thou nuting out a good route.

cheers..

I'm just wondering why it's OK to lead a trip tomorrow, but you won't do one on Saturday unless ECAN gives their blessing. Isn't that a bit contradictory? What's the difference between Wed and Sat, apart from 3 days, if ECAN say no?
