Dude, you had $600 to spend modifying your truck for better offroad use and you did what... bought a boost gauge and a big-bore muffler? The body lift kit won't help you much either since you will need cert for that and all it will really get you is room for 35" tyres... and you've only got 33's... with no rims.
You're not listening to any of the advice you're getting at all. That $600 would have got you a front locker that would have quadrupled your offroad ability on the tyres you had - tell me what your bling gauge and (a shudder to call it one) 'muffler' will do to help? The muffler will be gone first time you get half way up a steep bank and have to back down again because you didn't make it (you would have made it if you'd spent the cash on the locker tho)... because when you back down, the tip will dig into the dirt, crumpling the body of it and folding up the pipe so the engine can't breathe, causing it to overhead and stuff the head...
Of course you might get lucky and that might not happen... but whats the point? As you said, it still sounds the same (its a diesel, you'll be hard pressed to get any exhaust mods at all to make it sound any different, short of removing the entire exhaust - and even then it won't be that loud).
My 2c, you wasted your cash on pointless things that will make it less of a 4WD. If you ask for advice here at least be prepared to take it... and if you want some bling bling show-pony boy-racer car then sell the surf and buy a skyline or something like that. If you want a better 4WD then take the exhaust off and sell it - use what you get to make the truck better.

I was listning to some one, And still am TONY (Taz01) And the big bore thingy was free from my brother inlaw and the Boost gauge was only to see how much boost i was putting out, So i still have $260 Left For rims,
And now i have a job and more then $600 to spend,
I have been in Tony's truck and like it, All he has is a 65mm body lift, And 33x12.5'' wheels, And a 2.8l, And its goes just as much places as jerry's cruiser with lockers does!,
Now you can't say i aint been lisning,
And how many ifs surfs do you see with 35'' wheels under there gaurds? We get enouth rub with 33''s!
Ive even tryed to improve my spelling and inglish for you fullas,

good comments steve and rok,
mate what you need to do it get out on the tracks in your truck and see how it goes, out of your 5 million posts im not sure that i have seen any of you actually out there doing it. how on earth can you expect to build a better truck when you don't even no what yours is lacking?? we have all tried to give you the best advise possible from our own experiance and trial and error and its become a little like bashing our heads against a wall.
Your truck is ifs with an open diff we have all been there and at times its very frustrating but they can be great trucks for a low cost. Sure they can go alot of places but usually it means some heavy duty jandle to build momentum which is pretty hard on your truck.
Funny enough ya can fit 33's without a body lift and with 33's and a front locker and getting rid of that tow bar and muffler you would have a nice truck

I would get rid of the stupid tow bar, but i can't I need it to tow the the trailor,
I will probly get rid of the muffler, but IT is better then the old pipe sticking outa the back, the old one was sticking down about 2 inches lower then the one on there now, So i dont see how it could be and worse then the over one it just makes it look silly, Witch i don't realy care, it was free and i added it?,
after i get the rims i will probly get the lokka, but i dont need the locka for the offroading ill be doing arround here, Just for places like rally woods that ill probly only do once or twice a year,

is it an option to make your tow bar removable or mount it up higher? on my surf i had the factory pipe but tucked up as close to the tail gate as possible and still every time i went out i bent it and ripped it on rocks etc just because it was free is it worth destroying? they are worth good money and only my opinion but i think a straight peice of pipe coming out behind the rear wheel or tucked up just under the tail gate would look better.
Each to his own

Well i would make it removable, But It's welded to the chassis because wen i got it, It was ripping the chassis apart so DJ Made up some brakets to strengthen it, And welded it,
Aint come apart yet and ive landed on it a few times,
And the back of the trailor is just about touching the ground as it is so can't mount it up higher

I geuss i could do that, Ill just have to find some straight pipe now,

I have to admit it does look good from the rear

ok dude theres some good advice in previous comments that i would like you to consider.....
1 lose the muffler....
2 lose the towbar....or have removable one made...
now my truck goes where jerry goes with his lockers cause i drive hard very hard tends to break things hard
now i gather you cannot afford to drive yours in this manner cause you will spend more time doing repairs than 4wheelin
if i had the money i would have a front locker ,slip rear, spring lift, decent tyres but i dont but have a well equipped workshop and the skills to stay mobile .
whoever suggested 35s has never driven a 2.4 surf with em on it just wont have enough power and wont fit unless you chop the guards

I did, and I have, and they do, and you don't.
And as to my first post, it wasn't meant to be quite so inflammatory, but I do hate seeing money wasted on 4WDs on pointless things... now you have a job, get DJ to make a new crossbar for the towbar sideplates, and have a square receiver hitch welded into it - see the pics of one I built for a guy a couple of years back... then go to a towbar place and order a tongue with the right amount of drop to get the ball at the right height. You can then also fit things like removable hooks etc when you need them.
Do it something like this, then bring the exhaust pipe out the side just behind the left rear wheel and you'll be right as rain.

get DJ to make a new crossbar for the towbar sideplates,
errr thanks for volunteering me

thats ok Ill do it because I'm Mr tight arse when it comes to spending money as well ( Ill get you one day Steve...

)I dont want to get into a match of whos truck is better than someones, as trucks are used in different enviroments. But I think that Jase has asked for advise and wether he takes it or not then thats his own desion... We dont want to all end up with the same 4wd's as we would all be driving Toyota's.

Jase if you are doing nothing on the week end I strongly suggest you come for a ride thats
a ride not a drive then you may ? see how a 4wd can be made to preform very well against comp vehicals with very little money being spent. When people give advise please qualify it by giving a reason why you would do such and such.. then its up to Jase to make up his mind? Then we can kick the shit out of him for getting a bling bling muffler and putting photos up here ... I get first kicking thou!! now go to bed as I have to take to Captain Morgan and the crew...

Jase before you venture out to get muddy in your "beast" can you drop by... I'm a bit concerned as you have had a body lift of 65 mm yet you havent mentioned anything about steering shaft lenghtening or are your brake hoses able to extend through the full amount of travel, and hows the fuel tank filler, what about the clutch pipe/hose, shock travel.. just to mention a few. 65mm lift must be a shit to drive around corners..???yes you do need a cert and cow shit will not cover up anything... bad advise

I'm running -18 offset 15x8 steel rims with my 33's, but if I had the choice again id go with -24 for just a little more clearance.
They were $85 each from Dury Tires / South Auckland.
also heres a pic of the rear bar i made up for my surf

food for thought
