We'd ventured into a track that apparently only people with 37"+ tyres go up and had managed to get almost the whole way back to to the road before running into problems. Was a friend of a friend of a friend recovery so not officially by the club, but since they could see we had well setup trucks and all the gear and werent just idiots playing around and had given a good effort of recovering ourselves, infact had spent about 2 hours hand winching with a hi-lift jack to get one truck clear lol. Cost us $200 all up, they guys got to have a bit of a play, we learnt a few lessons that day/night, and everyone was ok and drove home. Big thanks to them. $8k sounds like a rediculous figure. as mentioned before i think you pay a reasonable pre agreed amount and shouldnt be expected to pay for the recoverers broken gear. We agreed on an amount and were made aware that if they needed to get in more gear we would be charged accordingly
How long did it take them to get you out & what did they have to do to recover you ......id never even think of charging someone stuck id come across on a track

3 of us went into the Mungatukukukukukukuukukukkuuuukk for a wee play, found three young fellers who had taken a 2wd lowered lowlux on street feet up a gravel creek.
Guess what?
Yup, the got stuck. Waved us down as we strolled past, and they took us up the creek to where the water was flowing into the back of this POS toyoda.
Hooked Alux onto to it and dragged it out. Took nearly a minute!!
Escorted em back to the road and told them off for taking such an ill-equipped POS off road.
THEN I mentioned the fee!!!!
Shoulda seen their crest-fallen faces and the despair of three young fellers who are always broke.
Told them that for the rest of their lives they MUST stop and offer whatever help they can to stuck motorists where ever they are! Of course they agreed! What else could they do? I hope they remember, But dont bet on it.

The 1st guy spent around 2 hours trying to modify our rigging to get my truck out but with a dead winch it wasnt happening and he wasnt keen enough to drive in by himself, so used a long extension and pulled the truck we had managed to clear though the last bog and go him off home. Then came back up the next morning with another guy who brought his winch truck up and came in and winched mine and the 3rd truck out. Brought us up pies and hot coffee lol good blokes. Was hardly going to complain to cover thier time and fuel and the pies lol

This tread is awesome. It has been great to hear from heaps of people who I am guessing have never been over Thompsons and certainly not in the last month yet know all about it and are happy to do recoverys for free. As a regular user of Thompsons (right across and back) there are a lot of locals who have had a proper gutsfull of Dickheads getting stuck on Thompsons when there imagination is better than their ability. Along with others I have towed heaps of people out in all states (pissed, stoned and just plain stupid) and all the promises of some just reward is all shit. A while ago I made a decision that unless a stuck truck is suitable to be there, broken, or has children in it, then it can stay there. I will do what I have to too get past them and I will go on my way along with a number of other locals. Clubs are great to belong to.
Maybe we should make some space on here for people willing to come and do recoverys, to list their contact details and us locals will pass the details on and that way everyone will be happy.

Post the contact details.
Just a note that I did not take part in that recovery but know that there are a lot of guys in the BOP club who are top people and have done heaps of recoveries in the past that you never hear about.

I have refrained from commenting on this topic because I could see this side of it.As a rescuer when is enough enough. I think though as you have decided for yourself to not do recoveries is the way to deal with it. not to think lets make some money off these twits. If you haven't got the attitude of go in and have some fun playing in the mud pulling people out then don't bother and let them sort themselves out.
I almost needed rescuing in pureora a couple of years ago. Trying out a freshly built truck ventured in with one truck in the wet. thinking have a winch we will be ok. the winch dissetagrated and we were in the poo. walked out and didnt really think of getting help. more ok how do we sort this ourselves. long story short bought a turfor hand winch in taupo and spent a long day bringing our selfs out. five hours getting in and 3 days to get out. point is that in getting a turfor winch sorted we ended up at the superwinch dealer in taupo. Clem's shop 4wder and offroad racer from taupo 4x4 club. It was decided that if we didnt get ourseves out by saturday he and a couple of mates would come and drag us out. Half an hour drive to get there for them. the only cost mentioned was reimbursement of fuel. Thats the kiwi way. Do it because they wanted too or dont bother. I'm stubborn and didnt want to be the guy that needed rescueing. hellof an adventure and now we have a turfor winch in the recovery kit. missus was kind of over it after 3 days tho
an 8 grand rescue was just taking the piss. blood would of been spilt if it had been my truck being held ransom.
