niblik wrote:okay.... slight rethink to original plan... sorta.....

here goes a light run down...

coils all round with the 3b mated to a lux 5 speed and a twin transfer set up using trail gears adaptor and 4.7 low gears, use rusty's tub on dayglo's chassis, 60 series diffs running 5.29 ratios with the twin arb's or an auto and arb combo, 60's power steering, 6 point rollcage, tube front guards, the 37 wranglers with internal air beadlocks on the new rims running the longs and hub gears, prob chuck on seats from the rover or dayglo too...

Hey Jase.

How's the build going? Got a good camera yet?
I was looking at my 60 series 5 speed in bits getting a new bearing kit installed this week. The guy doing it had a Lux 5 speed apart at the same time. I looked at it and scratched my head. Mine looked like a truck gearbox in comparison. The Lux gearing in it looks so weak and small.

lighter weight it might be, but it seems to handle screaming supras and things like v8 rovers being put through it so hopefully the high power of a highly std 3b power plant will be ok..

anyways, not got a decent camera of my own but may be able to find someone elses to use.. *cough* off the olds *cough*

well there was another session on the thing the other night and made some good head way me thinks.. pulled apart a side shifter transfer case and matt had a nudge at makin it the middle box with a welded shifter in the top.. still gotta do the 4.7's in the rear transfer case though..

the bottom control arms, according to documented findings in the books of carnage, say that the lower arms need to be approx 70% longer than the upper arms and flat as practically possibly to the ground? well i think we achieved that last night too.. pics to follow of course, put chops 37's on and flexed it up after cuttin off chassis mount and moving forward... ended up makin the control arm about 350 to 400 mm longer... :D also chucked the 60 series springs in the front of it with less leaves in it... that and jase ended up clampin the rear springs top and bottom and it was better at flexin.. no sideways distortion.. oh sweet!! flexed pretty goodly...

anyhoo, as you were..

hello.. time for a little installment of 40ness..

after a great heads up from mad mike,i was able to locate a bellhousing from a dyna to pair the 5 speed lux box to the 3b 'power' plant..

when first fittin it together i tried to adjust the metal spacer plate that fits between the bellhousing and motor to fit the starter, but when turnin it over, a rather 'cringe causing' GRAKKK was to be heard.. plan 2. stole the flywheel, metal spacer and all clutch components (as new) from rusty's drive train and stuck it on... adjusted the housing (ya can see the slotted hole) to match the metal spacer plate thingy and turned it over.. SWEET!!!

next i had to dremel just a tad off the bottom of the clutch forks mounting ball thing and then bolted the housing to box, and all then all that to the motor.. as below pic shows.. i've left out the clutch and pressure plate for this fitting to see how the spindle fits, then will refit with clutch etc for spline checkin etc.. i would of checked it there and then but work was beckoning.. will know more soon..

With that much flex you should be posting to this thread nib.
I'm sure you'd win the max, "flex" thing.

a cobber at work was able to press the splines into a piece of stainless steel pipe and also tig'd up the ends.. (its a coupler for the drive spline from a 5 speed gearbox to the tranfers..)
Image

finished up the adaptor to join the gearbox to the transfers and bolted the lot all together and in the truck.. had to clock the transfers a bit to avoid bolts hitting bolts etc which ends up being a good thing.. moves the forward facing output up a little.. the whole thing ended up being not quite as long as what was anticipated too..
Image

(sorry for 'head on the side' photos.. only got my cell phone to use...)

had to remove stocko seats to make room for the extra gear lever's down the centre from the transfers.. it now has some seats and ample room for the levers..
Image

painted tie rod / draglink and hi steer arms finally too.. steering link in from column to box.. (thank god!! thought i had lost it.)

Only road cars are driven every day. Any idiot can drive a road car!

Proper rigs are like the finest things in life, and must be savored when used, hence you would spoil the enjoyment using them every day :D :D :D

"the finest things in life". Very true.
But I prefer to get a little of both worlds, so I can drive mine everyday. 8)

I wondered if nib was going to get his road legal is all.
